Salmon fishing

Uploaded on December 28, 2011

This is a real tough place for getting answers.
wbchinook, I just now found your e-mail! ...some 19 weeks later!!

Here's my NEXT question!

I have in my possession, two ABU Garcia reels. One is a 5000 and the other, a 6000C. I know the 6000C will handle a salmon, what I need to know is, how much and what test line? Mono? Braided?
With a "power" handle, I'm quite certain the 5000 will also handle salmon.
Same question with it.
I am also aware that, mono- braided, is a "personal" choice/like/dislike. Give me some +'s and -'s for each.

Both these reels are antiques and are in "like new" condition!

Both of your reals will handle salmon fishing just fine and dandy you don't have any worries there. I work as a Deckhand on charter boats that do salmon fishing out of Ilwaco WA and I prefer to run lighter tackle myself, however the typical standard around here is to run 20-25 pound mono with about a 3 foot 15 pound mono leader, however the techniques do very up the coast and into the different rivers and tribs.

Thanx, salmonguy1307!

I finally found a booklet that came with one of the reels that included both. Oddly, I've discovered a third reel! It's a 5000C that has a "speed" kit installed. These kits were available OTC in the early to mid 70's.

BTW, how far is Ilwaco from Bellingham?
Are there canneries where bait fish (herring) can be caught.
My only experience with this type fishing was in Kodiak, AK. Just around the corner of the "breakwater" from the dock, was a cannery. Sufficient "herring" were quickly caught to have fresh bait for each day.
How about halibut, ling, grey cod?
I know I don't have enough reel for halibut, unless they are small. I think the 100 or so pounders would be fun, but what I catch will be for my own consumption and don't have any desire to set any world records! LOL!!!

Thanx again,

Bubba

Bubba,

Its about a 5 hour drive south Ilwaco is on the long beach peninsula and near the Washington and Oregon border. There are cannery's around where you can get your fresh bait, down here we use mostly fresh anchovies and not to mush herring but up north they use more in the way of cut plug herring.

There is some pretty good halibut grounds down here as well as bottom-fish/ling cod, we also do alot of sturgeon and albacore trips as well. The coast has a good amount of good fisheries to offer and is defiantly worth learning and at least experiencing.

Thanks again, salmonguy1307!

As I no longer have "dial-up" at home, I come to a local library once or twice a week. THAT'S why it takes me so long to respond.
