Off Topic: Wanting to Learn how to Fish

Uploaded on July 03, 2009

Hi. I am new to fishing and new to the boards. What do you recommend a beginner who is interested in learning to fish do when he doesn't really have anyone to teach him? My father was a fisherman and unfortunately I never went with fishing with him and I to this day regret that I didn't. Monday will be seven years that my father passed away and I found his fishing pole and fishing tackle box and I remembered how much I would have liked to have gone fishing with him. I have two young boys and a young daughter and I think fishing would be a great way for us to bond but I do not know how to fish. How do you recommend that I pick up the sport and what would be the best day for me to learn the sport of fishing? It would be a great way for me to further improve my relationship with my children.

I also posted this in the questions section but I think it should have gone here first, sorry.

Hello. It’s good to hear your enthusiasm about exploring the world of fishing...Especially with your children! I represent the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, and we have a great Web site, www.takemefishing.org that could be very helpful in every aspect of getting started. This includes locating the best places to fish in your area, getting a license, and identifying the type of fish you’ve caught!

While you're there, be sure to check out the "Catch a Boat" game, because what could be better than starting this new hobby with a FREE Triumph boat?!

Happy Fishing!

Hi, i started fishing years ago with my grandfather, and he taught me quite a bit, but one day at a local bookstore i noticed numerous books on fishing. the k.i.s.s. series has a very informative book on different species and what to use for specific fish, also fishing for dummies is full of useful info. There are also numerous clubs out there for any level fisherman. you can locate these clubs by searching on the web. good luck , enjoy the outdoors
