Trout Fishing
Despite the foot of snow and 32 degrees the sunshine created a very good hatch of #18 black midges and #14 black stones. Both crawling all over the snow. It has begun.

Exciting to see bugs, but I seldom see fish taking them! Generally, in Winter, you have to fish a nymph deep, and slow, or a streamer fished slow, even dead drifted.
Yeah, the spring hatches are starting in earnest around here. Blue Winged Olives and Caddis are really getting it done right now. Midges are also hatching, but I don't see too many fish rising to them.
We have some BWOs and Midges through the winter here, but when it's really cold they only come off in the warm afternoons. Now they're coming off just about every day, like clockwork if you will.
BWO's are probably the early bug taken on the surface the best...caddis if coming off as well, and midge fishing can be productive,,,but the thing to think about is the fact trout are cold blooded, and when the water is cold their metabolisms are very low....they don't need to feed much. Usually slow and deep even with streamers is the most productive. When the water warms to say above 45%, and 50degrees can be magical, fish get active, and react, and move to flies much better.
Yeah. I mostly fish spring creeks, so the water temps are pretty steady through the year. But I could see that being the case on regular freestones. I generally just throw a #14 caddis in there with a Hare's Ear Dropper. I probably catch more fish on the dropper than the dry, but I do get just enough to rise to the dry to make it worth while. When the BWOs are coming off, I fish an Adams in the appropriate size, without a dropper of course. If midges is all their is, I just forget about it and scrape up the bottom with a nymph.

Saw a good hatch of #18 BWOs today along with a few hendricksons. I saw no rises but once the hennys come on it'll be the best dry fly fishing of the year. Ohio.
I also smoked the bass last night on a deer hair frog.
Good to hear Buckhunter the BWO's were smokin on the Arkansas Friday..right on top with an 18 BWO...it is good to get back out and discover the hole in my waders that I had forgotten about that I was "gonna get round tuit"
