Trout Fishing
I finally fried my old trout reel and am in the market for a new generation spinner. I am looking at the spinning reels offered by the big guys and am confused. My old reel had 2 ball bearings and was state of the art. Thses new ones have up to 10 and can cost hundreds. When I fish for trout I sit in a lawn chair at lakeside and mostly use PowerBait or drown worms using 4lb test. Most of the fish i catch are 1/2lb. stockers up to an occasional 3 pound native. What reel would to folks suggest? Can I keep it under $50? What say you? Thanks...
For what you're talking about, just about anything will do. I'd go with Shakespeare or Shimano anything. I have a Shakespeare reel that I've been using for more than 20 years without a hitch. It came as part of a rod/reel combo that probably cost $35 when I got it. I'd still be using the rod too if I hadn't shut it in my car window, twice.
If I could suggest the Pflueger President at a mere 65.00 for ten ball berrings. You will not beat the quality of this reel for the price. I just bought the 6940 and love it to death. This reel will also work very well if you decide to go after lager species of fish in the future. The most bang for the buck hands down.

the new shaekspere reels are junk. the older ones were great. just about any reel will just fine for what you are talking about. ever thought about taking up fly fishing?
I was in a similar market as you are...i just got a bps extreme reel...i'm pretty sure it's the lew's speed reel...looks exactly the same minus the color...and it cost 50 bucks...pfluger president is a great reel too... I believe wal-mart sells Abu-Garcia Cardinal 300u and 301 for about 35 dollars, great reels for the money, and i am a huge fan of the durability and performance of abu-garcia cardinals, they make several series(300, 400, ect)
I've always used a pflueger reel. For all the reasons stated above by bowriver. I would suggest looking into Temple Fork Outfitters for your rod. For a hundred bucks you get a quality rod that is designed by Gary Loomis. This rod has an amazing feel to it. I've also always depended on Fenwick. They make excellent rods, and I would like to give their EliteTech River Runner Series a shot.
Whatever you do, choose a rod and reel that is comfortable for you to use.
I use a Shimano FX1000fb and it was less than $20 and itis about 10 years old now still works like new great bargin reel.
Got to stay up with modern tech..many do. I just was in the sporting goods store yesterday, and mentioned to my friend, the Tackle Mgr. that I saw a $200 spinning reel offered in Cabele's catalog! He said, "Did you see the one I just sold that guy? It was a $200 spinning reel." And he said they have more expensive ones! Can't head to the water unarmed! Get a hunch and bet a bunch!
