Trout Fishing

Wacky Style for Trout

Uploaded on October 28, 2011

I was fishing in a spot last night that get's heavily fished with little success. An 11 inch brown and an 8 inch brown was all I was catching. After it got dark and I couldn't see the dry fly I was throwing, I switched to the trout magnet trout worm that I have been wanting to try out for over a month now and rigged it wacky style. My first cast BAM! I caught a fat 15 inch brown. Three casts later BAM! another one. I was so happy because it was working so well, but my wife was calling so I had to go. I will definitely be going back to that hole to use the same thing. How many of you have used trout worms? How do you usually rig them/fish them? And if you have ever rigged one wacky style, how did it go for you? And if you have never used a trout worm, how is the fall fishing?

real worm?..or a tied, San Juan worm fly? After dark makes all the difference in the world to wary fish.

It was a plastic worm made by trout magnet. The funny thing is, I went back the next day and during the last few minutes of daylight I had a few bites but no hook ups and then when it got dark, nothing. What is your favorite night fly/lure/bait for browns?

I should've been more clear in the question. Plastic trout worms.

I'm strictly a fly guy so my favorite on wary browns is to fish during low light conditions, and throw streamers. I have color preferences according to the temperature of the water.

Could you lay that out for me? What would be good for different water temps? I am mostly an ultralight guy but have a fly pole and would like to become much better.

I'm talkin browns now, but for cold water...water temps lets say below 45 degrees I have never seen anything better than WHITE. Water warms, and for summer, and early fall I like the different combos of yellow, and brown with maybe some orange thrown in. For the lure guy those jig hooks in whatever wt. heads you need to get down, and a white tube skirt put on it. In warmer water the spinners work best, at least in my area. And I am talking rivers.

Yeah, I'm talking rivers too. With the streamer, do you just strip it back to you? Is there a certain speed that you like or does it depend on the day?

Wnat the fly to move downriver as I strip jerk, so I don't remove the belly in the line often, and I don't want to pull the fly FAST and coming away fast from where I cast. I often let the line slip back through my hand as I strip. I want to stay in the zone for a period of time. Often, you will get the strike early on...the first few strips after casting. Fish sees it, hears it, and darts, and strikes. Those situations happen 9 to 1 over many strips out away from your target, generally some cover like a boulder, or tree limbs, or the bank. We are much more productive fishing out of a boat to make several strips, and then cast back into the zone again then to continue stripping all the way back.
