Upstate New York Trout fishing.

Hey everyone, first post here. Im a military member stationed in the Saratoga Springs area in upstate New York. Im new to river fishing and new to trout fishing. I have attempted to bag trout in the Kayaderossera creek and have had no luck in catching anything.I have been using an ultra light spinning rod with 4lb test line and salmon egg sacks on a number 6 hook. (Pink salmon eggs were recommended by a local and reported to have worked in the area.) I have tried to spot trout and to be honest, I'm not even seeing any. Maybe I just don't know what to look for. Short of being told to take up fly fishing, can anyone give me any tips or pointers in the right direction... Not opposed to being directed to another website for reading as I wouldn't mind some literature either if need be.
