What's your Biggest suprize catch while fishing?

Uploaded on April 23, 2010

What's your biggest or weirdest suprize catch while fishing? I was fishing for Rainbowtrout in Laurel Lake in Kentucky tided to a boey in 100ft of water fishing at night with laterns using corn, I was fishing about 35ft down were the trout stay during the summer and I got a bite to my surprize when i got the fish up to the boat it was not a trout but a 4lb Largemouth Bass. I have no idea what that bass was doing in 100ft of water nor why it hit on a hook covered with corn.

I was casting out for panfish with my ultralight gear and then I felt a tug. I set the hook lightly and expect a panfish. Then a steelhead jumps and flips out of the water. My bearings whail for 45 minutes until I pull up the trophy landlocked steelhead. As I'm lifting it out of the water with my bear hands, it wiggles and breaks off.

Great story Panfry101, sorry you lost the fish but that's fishing. I caught a 10LB Striper in GA while using a Ultralight fishing for Bluegill i got it in after chasing it down the Chattohochee River for half a mile with the trolling motor.

Like the stories everyone, mine had to be when i was fishing a trout stream close to my house which has smallmouth, rockbass, chubs, your normal creek fish. When i pulled out a 12 inch walleye that had a tag in its back. After sending the tag in to the WV DNR, they had told me it was stocked in a lake near by (Cheat Lake) and made the run up the lake and up the trout stream 400 yds. Definity caught me off guard.

It wasn't huge but it was a nice surprise. I was sight fishing for bluegill on a 3wt rod with a size 26 mosquito. They scattered on one of my casts. Before I could lift my line from the water a 12 inch bass took my fly. That was a lot of fun on a 3wt. Another time (same lake) I was twitching a clouser minnow along the bottom catching bass (12 to 14 inches) and I caught a good sized catfish.

As a teenager, I was fishing for Walleyes below the spillway of a large dam. About 1 a.m. my buddy hooked something big. He played it through the current toward shore as I waited with a long handled landing net in my hands and a flashlight between my teeth.

The fish didn't fight quite like a Walleye and definitely not a Channel Cat. He brought "it" in and I made a swipe and netted what turned out to be a 3 foot eel. We were both more than a little surprised by that. The "unknown" certainly adds to the fun of night fishing.

By the way, to cook an eel: Skin it like a catfish. Parboil it for a few minutes. Scrape the layer of gel-like fat off. Cut into 6 inch segments. Roll in egg and cracker crumbs. Deep fry. It's excellent.

I fishing my small pond for bluegill using a hook and bobber. All of a sudden the bobber went under the water. I quickly set the hook the strange thing was, was that it felt like my hook was embedded in a brick wall. Turns out it was a 25 pound snapping turtle (if you have any experience with snapping turtle you'd know that those things are MEAN!!!!) fortunately I had a pair of needle nose pliers that I was able to get the hook out with. We released back into the pond. A few years later though we found stuck head first in one of our muskrat traps. The old conibear trap proved to much for the old snapper

tied the wrong knot with braided line. hooked a nice large mouth in a farm pond guessing it was 9-11 lbs from when we saw it jump. when her belly hit the ground as i was about to grab her she jerked and pulled my knot out. learned that lesson the hard way to tie the right knots.

another time we were trolling around and stopped out 100 yds off the bank for my buddy to rig up his rod. i dropped a plastic lizard down just for the heck of it and ended up landing a 7 lb bass

My story isn't as good as some of you but it is kind of crazy. I was fishing for rainbows and not having any luck. I had my 4 girls with me and they were playing down the bank. I finally got a bite and reeled it in and had a huge size crawdad on the lure. He actually had the lure in his mouth. Then very next cast, same thing. I gave em both to the girls and they had a heck of good time playing with the little guys. Never had it happen again or before, but had it happen twice in a row that day.

im 14 and last season i was goin for my first steelhead. Id been tyrin for weeks. I was driftin a jig and shrimp when my bobber started moving around.i was so excited and waitin for it to go under for a good hook set. when it finnaly did i set the hook and started reeling expecting a good fight as these fish can get over 20 pounds. it came in pretty easily and it turned out to be a sqawfish.i was really dissapointed but i guess it makes a funny story. so hopefully i get one this year. good fishin to all of you!

When I was 15 or 16, I was fishing a small pond with a wooden flatfish from my dad's tacklebox. As soon as it hit the water, a seagull divebombed it, and before I knew what was happening, I'm reeling in this seagull 30 feet up in the air! My dad cut the line (and lost a lure).

I was fishing a topwater jitterbug for largemouth in a private pond when something sucked it down, after a long fight finally pulled in a 10 pound blue catfish. I have also hooked about a 3 pound channel cat on a streamer while fly fishing.

fishing in a small pond for trout in colorado, I had two different hooks on my line about three feet apart when I got a bite and reeled in about a 4 inch large mouth. as i stared retardedly at my tiny fish, i realized my line was still tugging, further down i pulled up a 13 inch rainbow. sure one of them was about as long as my hand is wide.... but i caught two fish at once!

I thought I had a nice walleye on fishing on Pelican Lake years ago near Detroit Lakes, MN but only had a Freshwater Drum on. Ice fishing in the winter I had a muskrat come up in my fishhouse. Most of us that fish a lot have caught a turtle. Some cast out and a seagull picks up the lure.

tied the wrong knot with braided line. hooked a nice large mouth in a farm pond guessing it was 9-11 lbs from when we saw it jump. when her belly hit the ground as i was about to grab her she jerked and pulled my knot out. learned that lesson the hard way to tie the right knots.

another time we were trolling around and stopped out 100 yds off the bank for my buddy to rig up his rod. i dropped a plastic lizard down just for the heck of it and ended up landing a 7 lb bass

Fishing on the Rio Grande in New Mexico I was walking the dog with a Zara Spook. I was so good at it (ha) that I enticed a cormorant to attack it. That was a mess. I ended up cutting the line.

I was fishing for smallies in an eddie on the upper St. Croix River in Minnesota. I was twitching a rapala on the surface and a musky smacked the heck out of it. Because I wasn't set up to land a musky, I was hoping against all hope that it was just the biggest meanest smally on Earth. My hopes were dashed when the musky shot out of the water and thrashed a couple times in midair. Needless to say my line came shooting back at me and I never saw that rapala again.

I've caught a 15 inch channel on a piece of hotdog while fishing for bluegills. And the 19 inch bass thats my profile pic was caught on nightcrawlers while catfishing around dark in November while it was probably 45* out.

I was catfishing in a Pa. creek and thought I had hooked a monster catfish, when it turned out to be a 3 ft. eel! The guy next to me was so happy I cut the line and gave it to him! My good deed for that day!

I was fishing for smallmouth in the wisconsin river with a Storm Chug Bug when i had a 30 inch muskie bite and break me off on the hookset. Five minutes later the muskie jumps next to the boat to try and shake the hooks only to land in the back of my boat. I unhooked the chug bug from its mouth and released the muskie unharmed. A win-win for both of us!

I was fishing for steelhead on time bouncing along the bottom, and hooked a heavy fish, but it had no fight at all, just very hard to reel in. Got it in, and it was a lantern!....and believe it, or not, the lantern was still lit! :)

I also was casting a bottom rig off the end of a pier on the outer banks of north carolina, cast it and it kept going and going and I couldnt figure out why until I flipped the bail and a seagull dropped out of the air.

I was bass fishing when I thought my line got caught on a stick while reeling it back in. I pulled a few time lightly then Thought i pulled the stick loose, reeled it half way in then the line started to go back out. Finally was able to reel it in close enough to the beat to realize that it was about a 65lb snapper.
