Fire starting kit in a bottle.

Uploaded on October 08, 2009

I like to use the larger prescription pill bottles to have a miniture fire kit. I put strike anywhere matches, some tinder, and a magnesium fire starter in the bottle and throw it in my bag. Its water proof and cheap.

I use a small peanutbutter jar as a survival kit. Along with with the fire starter stuff, I put in fishing line and hooks, the line can double as snare lines, a survival blanket, small Snickers bars, and a micro multi-tool.

I've found out the hard way that "strike anywhere" matches can actually be rather particular about where they are struck. Cotton balls smeared with petroleum jelly catch the spark from your magnesium striker more readily, and if rolled in some of the magnesium flakes will burn just as hot.
