Hunting Gear
I am an avid hunter and fisherman who recently subscribed to Field and Stream. In April's "And The Show Goes On" David Petzal presents an informative review of the latest equipment. However his selfish and blatant political agenda in the introduction is disgusting. Lashing out at OUR President and Governor of New York has nothing to do with an equipment review. If I want to read his view on gun control there are plenty of places within the magazine to find that, and I carefully choose which ones to read. The process of embedding your personal viewpoints into an entirely unrelated article is extremely poor writing. As a customer I am very unhappy to find this political propaganda in such an article. Not every subscriber who loves the outdoors as much as I do fits Mr. Petzals ideology and therefore should not be lured into reading his personal rants in a review article. Mr. Petzal I hope you read this and think to yourself about customers like me who are offended by your reporting.
I like Petzal's articles and his political view points. I hope he keeps it up. I'm offended by your whining.
Our president and your governor have an agenda that is directly opposed to the principles of the constitution they swore to uphold when they took office and to the political views of most readers of Field and Stream. One could even say directly opposed to "we the people" owning our government. The more people that know this, the better in my opinion. I'd even like to see it on more billboards around the country! I'd really like our voters to save the future of America before it is too late!
You are correct though in assuming that writers, famous people and members of the press have an unfair advantage in advancing their personal political agenda. They have a built-in audience. They, do of course risk losing that audience if the majority of their audience has an opposing view.
For example, Oprah risked losing a lot of viewers by strongly supporting her political views on her show. She risked losing the conservatives and the Republicans who may have accounted for as much as 50% of her audience. I think DEP is safe though because his audience probably has less than 1% who have your political perspective. If he loses that 1%, he might actually encourage new readers to increase his readership by another 25% or more.
Schriener,
My advice to you is to get over it.
First of all, Dave has every right to give an opinion on politicians when their policies directly effect our ability to pursue happiness via guns and shooting. I do not know of one shooter that is favor of the Governor of New York's insane , hastily proposed new gun law that he rammed down the gullet of the citizens of New york. the law was poorly written, make criminals out of law abiding people for owning something that they previously bought legally. I did not even take in account what law enforcement personnel would be carrying, and if a gun expert can not criticize what laws politicians write in a knee-jerk manner, who the he11 can?
The last point that I would like to rant about is I believe you are a troll. someone who just wants to stir the pot, so If you don't like what is said by gun writers such as Mr. Petzal, then do not read it, there are plenty of us who will!!!!!!!!!!
You have all missed my point by quickly going into a litany of political rambles just like Petzal who I am sure loves being compared to Oprah.
shreiner,
Your Capon in Chief and your lame-brained Guv can KMA.
End of story.
I will go a step further, any gun writer that doe not make his/her opinion known during this time when so much is at stake is doing a disservice to there readers. We can not blindly go talking about shot placement or what caliper to use on what animal when an entire class of weapon(modern sporting rifles) are being systematically banned one state at a time and a national ban had been introduced in the Senate. all of these restrictions, regulations, laws, polices, have one huge effect, they make it more expensive and harder to pursue a way of life that we enjoy. How can any shooter seriously want to impose more and more cost, more and more time filling out forms, more and more waiting periods, and more and more bureaucrats making decisions on who can shoot what and where.
Way to go Petzel!!! The silent majority has sat on their buns and been silent way too long and we have seen where it has gotten us. Now more than ever we need to speak up about our constitutional rights and the liberal jerks that are trying to trample upon them especially the second amendment. We must use every forum and every opportunity to get our position known. And as Silas says on Duck Dynasty "That's a fact Jack".
schriner,
I'm pretty sure we all understand you, you however fail to understand that we just don't give a damn. Being offended is a personal matter of opinion. I read Petzals articles and I like how he rants about the pin heads in Washington. I'm not offended by it, in fact I love reading about it. Evidently, as you can see from the other posts, I'm not the only one here who feels the same way. Its all a matter of opinion.
Speaking of opinions, I do think Petzal has an obligation because of his position of influence, to sound the alarms, rant, rave, or whatever when our hunting and shooting freedoms are being attacked. I believe that there are many in our government that hate gun ownership, and believe that no one should own a firearm of any kind, period. I'm glad to know that there are those like Petzal, and many others, that will sound the alarm, or call B.S. when its needed. In today's society, its always needed. God bless em.
Finally, a response that actually addressed the topic without calling me names or referring to television personalities(even though you threw in O'Rieley's pin heads which is quite representative of our officials). I did not start this message so that folks would agree with me, instead, I was voicing my opinion about how I prefer to get my information as a CUSTOMER of this magazine. I am paying for a product and I have the right to speak up when I feel like the integrity of said product is lacking. If I am reading an objective article about the new Mac Book Pro computer I do not want to hear about how Steve Jobs is an Atheist who frequently travels to South America to go on a hallucinogenic spirit quest. Just as we are paying the salaries of those in Washington who do not always have our best interests in mind, we have the right to voice our opinions through voting or simple message boards like this. Thankfully we live in a place where this kind of communication is possible, even if we do not always agree on how it is delivered.
I thought Steve Jobs was a Buddhist.
hey schreiner...your little rant is in itself a political rant, stop being a mamby-pamby cry baby and chill out.

This wanton waste has gone from ridicoulus to absolutley crimnal. Has every goverment nut job comepletly lost it? At what point do us poor peasant sportsmen drag out the pitchforks and torches and take our government back? (I was speaking figuritivley there ATFE, please don't raid me). Our politicians have gotten completley sauce fried on "free money". We either get this under control, or we loose everything...everything.
Ben, you win, I guess I am the one who needs to chill out, sorry I am just over reacting to something that is important to me. I am just a cry baby and troll. I should be more calm like you.
Dallas, my mistake, you are right. Sorry about that.
I'm with you Schreiner. Someone in upper management should tell Petzal that the pages of the magazine shouldn't be used as a personal soapbox. That's not what many of us subscribe for. I've stopped putting any credence into the things Petzal writes these days, if I read them at all, simply because he can't seem to keep his stink out of what might other be good advice.
I am all for Petzal giving his personal advice, but don't pass it off in an article about equipment reviews, that's all. He is obviously a very smart individual and an asset to the magazine, just wish he would stop confusing topics.
Back under your bridges, Trolls!
Thank you sir. Keep the name calling coming, it surely makes you look intelligent.
Well if you look at it from a different point of view, the people Petzal bashes have a place in equipment reviews. Petzal will be reviewing sticks and rocks if these bafoons get their way. Now you can only do so many reviews on sticks and rocks.
But you are right, even if he is reviewing sticks and rocks, he will probably talk about the new laws of "how you can only have one rock in your pocket, no more hi capacity pockets...what next"
As you see most people in these forums are the "wants and needs of one do NOT outweigh the wants and needs of others..." We understand people will be offended by one thing or another. We just don't care to hear it. So as a "customer" you can choose not to read Petzal, but there are a lot of other customers here who like him how he is. Keep it up David!!!!
What WAM said............
Hell that's just part of Petzal's writing style. Enjoy it or not. Your choice.
I like Dave and his rants and I shoot a 30-30! I agree that in this day and age we cannot afford to sit still while the anti's try to push their agenda upon us. Politics aside Dave's fun to read, he's not boring and I agree with most of what he says.
I get that it is part of his writing style, I just think it is misleading and inappropriately placed into a good review article. Does he actually think that the majority of his readers are not aware of what is going on in Washington when it comes to guns. Just about every response has come from someone who obviously pays attention to the news. It is very poor writing to use tactics in the way he did.
Again, If you don't like his writing, don't read it! I take a completely different point of view, that he has an obligation to give us his opinions, we are at a point where those who want to take away our rights are doing so, one state at a time, we need to rally. Maryland's governor signed their "version" of an anti sporting rifle law, which means the end of "3 gun" competitions in that state, and California has gone "lead free" and is trying to impose "micro stamping" even though it does not work, and that will make guns too expensive for many, and will discourage new gun ownership in the future, which is in effect taking guns away.
So I want shooting sports writers to take a stand.
Another vote in favor of Dave. He's not shy about his political views, but he's hardly outside of the mainstream for the community that he speaks to.
Petzal isn't a reporter. He's paid to write pieces that entertain. And yes, that includes so-called "gear reviews."
I see, so a "gear review" is supposed to be entertaining. My fault, I thought product reviews fell under the informative writing style.
After what happened to the AP reporters, the First Amendment supporters should thank God for the Second Amendment supporters.
Without the Second, in short order there will be no First. The message needs to be delivered in whatever manner available, even in the midst of a product review.
Hooray for David Petzal, the letter writer who complained sux.
Hey, that's OK schreiner. Ignorance is not a crime or even a personality flaw. You'll get there.
