The Tip Board
A few years back I showed up to pre-season sight in my rifle at the target range several miles from town and discovered I didn't have any earplugs with me. Scrounging around in the truck, I found a plastic grocery bag behind the seat. I tore off two chunks of the bag about the size of my palm, wadded them up, and inserted in my ears. They worked better and are much more comfortable than the foam cylinder things. It may take a bit of trial and error to get the right size piece for your ear but you'll have lots of material to work with. Be sure to leave enough excess so you can grab it for removal when you're done.
