Rifles
alright, so i live in NW Illinois and i coyote hunt quite a bit weather permitting i was curious as to what would be a good starting rifle for me. the only rifle i have right now is a .22 lever action marlin, and i have my 10ga to kill the yotes but i want to move on to bigger and better things lol, so any ideas/tips/help would be greatly appreciated.
It depends on if you are going to want to use the rifle for anything else like deer hunting. If you want a dedicated coyote rifle a good place to start is a 223, 22-250, or a 243. I have killed coyotes out to 400 yards with the 223 and that's about its effective range for dogs. The 22-250 can do that and then some and is probably a better choice. The 243 is a great dog gun with varmint bullets, and can pull double duty as a deer rifle with a good hunting bullet. Another good double duty gun is the 25-06. You can load it light with 85 gr bullets for dogs or put a good 120 gr partition in it for deer, and there are many here on this website that have good reloading info on the 25-06. Much of it is preference. I like my 223, but if I were buying my first rifle I would strongly consider a gun that could pull double duty.
Depends how you hunt them. I also have land in illinois and if hand calling than a shotgun is my weapon. If using electronic than 22-250. I also use the accient 220 swift and my new 204 but the 22-250 blows the others out of the water on ballistic charts. I shoot a 40 grain vmax hornady for dogs. My 250 will shoot better and flatter than any 223. Honestly the 223 is the worst ballistic cartridge for the lighter rifles. The swift is the only other gun that can compete with the 250 (hence why I own them both). The only advantage to the 223 is the cheap ammo if you feel like target shooting. 243 is a great round but way to big for yotes. Killed a couple with mine and the hide was ruined using the 58 grain vmax. The 40 grain is as big as I shoot and it still leaves a goos size exit but it is manageable. Best of luck. ps better go quick cuz the dogs are really easy to cll at the moment.
Thanks for the input guys, i ended up purchasing a savage axis xp .22-250 today its cheap and from the reviews a good gun! now just waiting for the snow.
If you plan on calling do not worry about snow because there are less hunters without snow so your success will increase dramatically
Im going to by a savage axis xp .22-250 is it a good gun and if possibly will you tell me the grouping and what scope do you rec-amen.
Have not heard alot about the model but savage makes a very good shooting and reliable rifle. I honestly prefer remington 700 classic, browning a bolts and my favorate is ruger in the mark 2 which is now the hawkeye. Regardless and rifle these days will shoot good the extra money goes into recoil pads, triggers, stocks, and smooth bolt action. A good scope on any rifle will make a good gun. The 250 is my favoate varmit round so thats good and a great round for 400 yard shots which are common dog hunting when you call in 3 or 4 at a time. I like leupold for scopes but do not go cheap. My rule is spend doulble the amount of scope of what gun cost. So if gun is 400 than I spend 800 on scope. I would recomend a vx3 in a 4-12. 12 is plenty of power for the longer shots. I also recommend the hornady vmax 40 or 45 grain bullets. With my ruger and a lead sled I can shoot touching bullet holes at 400 yards.
OK thanks for the info
Josh, thats what i just bought, The Bushnell scope it comes with will do you great for now, its 3-9x40 power, from one hundred yards with slight tweaking i was getting decent 1.5 inch groupings i was using the cheapest winchester ammo i could find, just to get the cases :) and mdpaulus, we dont call much. so the snow is our backbone!
Anything from a 17 HMR, .204, .222, .223, 5.56, or even a .243 or larger will work if that's all you have.
