Deer Hunting

field cleaning kit

Uploaded on May 17, 2009

Whenever packing for a hunting trip or shooting outing, I always carry an emergency cleaning kit for the firearms that I will be taking. I use a full size cylindrical tooth brush holder. I can store several cleaning patches, a thin break down cleaning rod, a patch jag, small toothbrush, and cleaning brush. If the barrel becomes obstructed or dropped in mud or dirt, I can quickly clean my firearms and it stores in a small package, that can be stowed anywhere.

Just prevent dirt/ water/snow from getting inside the barrell in the first place. Put a small strip of black electrical tape over the barrel exit and secure with a wrap of tape around the barrel. This will not cause your gun barrel any damage and can be safely fired through. The pressure of the colum of air in front of the bullet will push the tape off. I have fired my 30:06 many time through this tape with no damage or noticable effect on the tajectory! A few dead deer is enough proof for me!

You don't have to drop your gun to get dirt or mud in the barrel. If you carry your gun in a rack across the front rack of your ATV the tires will throw dirt and mud at the muzzle. Like Natureguy, I swear by electrical tape over the muzzle.
