Shotguns

Franchi Instinct SL

Uploaded on October 18, 2012

Hello,

I'm looking for a new O/U shotgun for quail/pheasant hunting. I'm impressed by the Franchi Instinct SL shotgun. I'd like to get something in a 12ga and my concern is that the SL is a very light shotgun.

Has anyone had any experience shooting the Instinct SL in 12 ga? How was the recoil and your overall impressions?

Thanks!
Mike

O/u's that are light sure kick more than an autoloader. Do they make it in 20 ga.? I sure would consider a 20 ga. especially if you hunt quail. Lots of loads available including 3" 1 1/2 oz. loads that are the same as a 12 ga. field load. Shells are reasonable priced, avialable, the gun is thinner profile, lighter, and easier to carry then a 12 ga. The only time I would have to think about going to the 12 ga. is hunting late season pheasants in S. Dakota say, and gunners use heavy 3" loads of maybe an 1 1/2 oz. loads for long range pheasant shooting.

Thanks for your reply. They do make that gun in a 20ga, and I have been considering that as well. We only hunt wild quail and to date I've been using a 12 ga. The birds can flush at long ranges especially after they've been hunted a bit.

If I go to a 20 ga and shoot 3" 1 1/2 oz loads, aren't I just back to shooting a light 12 ga load and will have the same recoil?

Thanks
Mike

Quite possibly...It would be an 1 1/4 Oz load. For my experience when a bird flushes, and I mount and shoot, I do not feel the recoil. I sometimes think about it later as remembering it punched me pretty good, but somewhat of a guess, but never feel it when shooting at game. Maybe constant shooting at say doves it might get to me, but not a quail flush, or a pheasant flush. Fixed breach guns do kick. I have a very, light wt. Benelli 20 ga. auto, and never feel multiple shots with that gun, and it only weighs 5.6 oz. And I have an O/u in a 20 ga. Beretta that I like, and it kicks. 25 shots with trap loads at the trap club, and I am ready to put it up. But on birds? Different deal. And if you shoot the $22 dollar of Prairee Storm loads in 20 ga.?..very good longer range loads. I just like the lightness, and thinness of a 20 when carrying it for some distance in the field.

Forgot to tell you a key factor I forgot about in my O/U. I need to cut my stock down to mount quickly and get on target without having to push the stock away from clothing/body, then up and mount it. So on my expensive Beretta I shortened the butt pad to just a thin, rifle butt pad rather than cutting the stock. The pad can make a lot of difference with felt recoil. Some of them now are jell pads. They greatly reduce the felt recoil.

Has anyone else had a chance to shoot this shotgun?

Thanks

I doubt you will get a response Mike, ANDl, if someone bought one, they would say the love it! No one spends much money on something, then says I don't like it. The best thing you have going for that Franchi IS....it is in the family of Beretta shot guns along with Benelli...very good guns, and to belong to that group they can't be too shabby.

I believe that the Instinct and Instinct SL are manufactured in only the 20 gauge. That is what I gather from the Franchi web site.

Mike..I would forget about the problem with the long range shots, and a 20 ga. O/U. I am hunting a slightly bigger bird, and very, very similar in characteristics to quail, and that is my hungarian partridge hunting. They often flush a ways out. I have to sneak on them with my dogs not making any verbal commands, or whistle blowing, or it is forget it. I have been shooting my Berreta 20 ga. O/U with open chokes...first shot is Improved Cylinder and the upper barrel then is modified. I shoot 2 3/4" standard shells in a 1 oz load of #6's. FPS is 1,200. No Lately, and within a week, I have dumped 3 huns at very impressive distances with that load.
