What's It Worth?
MILITARY PAY: Our G.I.'s make enough ?! CINDY WILLIAMS was appointed by Obama as an Assistant Director for NATIONAL SECURITY in the Congressional Budget Office. This is an Airman's response to Cindy Williams' editorial piece in the Washington Times about military pay, and it should be printed in all newspapers across America . Ms. Cindy Williams wrote a piece for the Washington Times denouncing the pay raise(s) coming service members' way this year, citing that she stated a 13% wage increase was more than they deserve. A young airman from Hill AFB responds to her article below. He ought to get a bonus for this. "Ms. Williams: I just had the pleasure of reading your column, "Our GI's Earn Enough," and I am a bit confused. Frankly, I'm wondering where this vaunted overpayment is going, because as far as I can tell, it disappears every month between DFAS (The Defense Finance and Accounting Service) and my bank account. Checking my latest earnings statement I see that I make $1,117.80 before taxes per month. After taxes, I take home $874.20. When I run that through the calculator, I come up with an annual salary of $13,413.60 before taxes, and $10,490.40 after. I work in the Air Force Network Control Center where I am part of the team responsible for a 5,000 host computer network. I am involved with infrastructure segments, specifically with Cisco Systems equipment. A quick check under jobs for "Network Technicians" in the Washington , D.C. area reveals a position in my career field, requiring three years experience in my job. Amazingly, this job does NOT pay $13,413.60 a year. No, this job is being offered at $70,000 to $80,000 per annum. I'm sure you can draw the obvious conclusions. Given the tenor of your column, I would assume that you NEVER had the pleasure of serving your country in her armed forces. Before you take it upon yourself to once more castigate congressional and DOD leadership for attempting to get the families in the military's lowest pay brackets off of WIC and food stamps, I suggest that you join a group of deploying soldiers headed for AFGHANISTAN; I leave the choice of service branch up to you. Whatever choice you make though, opt for the SIX month rotation: it will guarantee you the longest possible time away from your family and friends, thus giving you full "deployment experience." As your group prepares to board the plane, make sure to note the spouses and children who are saying good-bye to their loved ones. Also take care to note that several families are still unsure of how they'll be able to make ends meet while the primary breadwinner is gone. Obviously, they've been squandering the "vast" piles of cash the government has been giving them. Try to deploy over a major holiday; Christmas and Thanksgiving are perennial favorites. And when you're actually over there, sitting in a foxhole, shivering against the cold desert night, and the flight sergeant tells you that there aren't enough people on shift to relieve you for chow, remember this: trade whatever MRE's (meal-ready-to-eat) you manage to get for the tuna noodle casserole or cheese tortellini, and add Tabasco to everything. This gives some flavor. Talk to your loved ones as often as you are permitted; it won't be nearly long enough or often enough, but take what you can get and be thankful for it. You may have picked up on the fact that I disagree with most of the points you present in your open piece. But, tomorrow from KABUL , I will defend to the death your right to say it. You see, I am an American fighting man, a guarantor of your First Amendment right and every other right you cherish. On a daily basis, my brother and sister soldiers worldwide ensure that you and people like you can thumb your collective noses at us, all on a salary that is nothing short of pitiful and under conditions that would make most people cringe. We hemorrhage our best and brightest into the private sector because we can't offer the stability and pay of civilian companies. And you, Ms. Williams, have the gall to say that we make more than we deserve? A1C Michael Bragg, Hill AFB AFNCC IF YOU AGREE, PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT OF THE AMERICAN FIGHTING MEN AND WOMEN. If you get this more than once, feel honored that you know more than one person who supports our military and appreciate what they do
One of my dad's friends from high school is in the National Guard and he said he made 6 figures last year when he was shipped out.
Only if he is a General Officer.
http://www.navycs.com/2011-military-pay-chart.html
I'm not sure of his rank, he was an officer, but not a General. He was saying he got bonuses and most of it was tax free. He said he would have to work 3 or 4 years at his other job to make what he made in 11 months in Afghanistan.
That is very interesting.
When you are on active duty in a war zone there are Several different types of pay added to you Basic Pay, and it is all tax free! So it is possible.
You may want to check your facts F&S. Cindy Williams IS NOT the Assistant Director. She WAS the assistant Director under President Clinton. This article has nothing to do with President Obama. Try actually researching a story before you publish a spam mail from Facebook.
PS: I am in the Army and have been for 9 1/2 years with 42 months deployed time. Thought I'd mention that before you start assuming things.
God's Voice,
F&S didn't post it, Clay did.
Another re- re- re- re-post of this.
There's quite a few errors in this.
I am not arguing against pay raises for Military. And the Reserves get screwed the worst.
But some mistakes in this old email have only gotten more glaring today:
"How to cope when the breadwinner is gone": Well guess what, your pay increases when you deploy. It's not easy without someone to help around the house, but with comrats and your 'hazardous duty pay', there's more money than being in garrison. Also, if you live on base, there's no rent, utility bills, or medical costs. My wife, though worried, made out fine while I was in the middle east.
In my nine years active, the only bill I had was a car payment and insurance.
As for the MREs? Well, suck it up, tough guy. I love field rations a lot better than I like going hungry. But the Air Force get catered to better than the Marines.
As for the job being so much? I'm a network engineer, and while we hear the economy is recovering, those jobs are long gone. When I rented my truck to move back to NC, they guy behind the counter was a Cisco engineer, and that's all he could find. I worked part-time as a bicycle mechanic in Atlanta to make some money. I'm currently making half what I was 5 years ago, but my mortgage hasn't gone down, nor the price of food, so that's pretty much bunk.
Military pay is low compared to many other jobs. And in a field where you can get killed with a higher average than a regular Joe, grunts aren't paid near enough.
But I don't have any medical coverage right now with what I'm making as a contractor, and as retiring from the Reserves, it's another 5 years before I see one dime of retirement pay (retired in '99).
So while the point is valid, this email is just whining.
VOG So you speak for G-d? I don't think so. Even if the article is an old one it points out the contempt O'bummer and the Marxist in our Government.
Jeff quit whining.
I retired from the Army after 26 year 9 months and 10 days, once I became an NCO I never felt "underpaid"!
You don't get it, do you, Moishe, even though you said; "you never felt underpaid".
I actually agree with that.
If you made, say, enough to take home $2,200 a month (take home, which means a fair job), first would be a $700 mortgage with taxes and escrow. Then utilities, then food, maybe a car payment, city taxes, car taxes, gas. If you have fair deductions for medical coverage, you might have $200-$300 for incidentals, evenings out, etc. Less if you smoke, less if you live in a big city. Oops, forgot insurance for that car.
Now, you're a young NCO. You live on base. You don't need a car, but most troops have a car, truck, or motorcycle. You take home $1,100 a month. No rent. No utilities. You can eat 3 meals a day free. Your car payment is $350 for that Mustang, and add $100 a month for insurance for it. That leave you with $650 a month to keep your uniform clean and get a haircut.
In some ways, military life is the toughest there is. You have to do things civilians would cringe and cry about. But it helps you grow up in ways the civilian will never really know.
It's hard, but it's not poverty. You are taken pretty good care of. Getting shot at is a big downside of that, though. That's why I do advocate high, very high salaries for grunts.

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=6&sqi=2&ved=0CD8QFjAF&url=h...
Mar 11, 2010 – Obama recently released his budget for 2011, and it included a 1.4 percent pay raise for military personnel, which, again, is in line with the ECI. ...
Did I say anything about the so called Messiah, when I posted the Pay Chart? You must be drunk or high to ask such a stupid question.
When did Obama release his budget for anyone to look at? The only one I have ever heard of for 2011 had another trillion in debt and the libs in the Senate rejected it 75-0.

All these posts and no one is pissed off that F&S posted such inaccurate information that is 11 years old? What the hell are our soldiers fighting & dying for? It's not so BS like this can go on. Real soldiers shouldn't be pissing/moaning about what some author said 11 years ago, they should be pissed that someone is trying to mislead them & manipulate them with fake info tacked on to old information. That's the real problem with this article and with Field & Stream publishing it like its real news. If F&S wants to be a gossip rag or propaganda machine for some political party then they are not supporting our military.

I don't understand why someone would post a lie? I know a lot of people lie a lot, and many think it's ok, but why post a factually lying stinking pile of you know what like this? Clay did you do this?
Oh, I get it. It doesn't matter if it's a lie as long as it says what you want to believe.
Hmmm. If someone really was deployed 23 of 26 years, it would have been requested under orders, desired, or as a re-enlistment guarantee. Not circumstances with a right to complain anyway.
If someone was forced to deploy that much, they wouldn't have gotten past the first re-enlistment.
So what point are you trying to make?
All 5 of my overseas tours including Viet Nam were voluntary.
Jeff you miss the point. The point is if he is unhappy he can ETS at his discretion.
Rat you do not have a gog in this hunt F/O
Also rat who do you think is lying? Be Brave for once in your life.
It is ridiculous how little soldiers make. I was signed up to leave for Ft. Benning for infantry training this past summer. My pal and I joined last January together but I ended up having surgery before I was to be shipped out. We were supposed to be making less than 17000 before taxes. We got a signing bonus of 1000 but they make you pay for the stuff they issue you so a lot of that went away quickly. All I know is that we as America need to give to soldiers whatever we can. America is changing for the worse and its very disappointing.
Rock rat wonders about posting a lie? Incredible! His entire religion of liberalism is based on a huge lie! ..called having huge cajone's.
Dutty, you are an E-1, they are not trained or ready for duty yet, many civilians would love to have $17,000 right not, by the time you get trained and deploy you will be making much more quitchur bellyachin.
right NOW*
Actually I was an E-3 and so is my pal but the majority of people who are down at benning with him are E-1. Many Americans are to lazy to work anymore. If they want that 17000 then join up.
The facts are...folks that join up know the pay scale. The facts are that when we are broke, and in danger of going under you can't provide raises, you are forced to cutback. But politically it is tough to deal with the emotional thing of pay scale for our military if the topic gets raised. It is like the 9-11 fireman/work force. Democrats wanted the moon in a bill as compensation appealing to the emotional side of it, and expecting voter support. When you say, "what is a human life worth?" that is a tough one to put a dollar amount on. And don't expect a liberal to deal with it in a commonsense way.
All the police and firemen there had very good Insurance plans for both health and death benefits from their Departments just as I do from the Army, I also have supplemental policies and it they had any common sense they did too. I am sorry they died as we all should be. But there is a limit to our funds.
Nobody gets paid enough if they're getting paid to get shot at.
I spent 14 yrs in would have spent 30 if not for medical retirement. The men and woman fighting in the Armed forces today DO NOT get paid enough for what they do. For most of us in a civilian job its 40 hrs per week. When deployed for the most part at least 84 hrs a week. With exception of police we dont get shot at, military shot at, mortared , RPG'ed and a miriad of other hazards. We should stand as a people and find out why politicians who can fly to other countries on the American people's dime for exta marital affairs get paid so much and the people fighting for our freedoms are living in tents, getting shot at have a hard time paying their bills when they first join the military.
Dear Ms. Williams,
I just finished reading your article on Denouncing pay raises for the for our military troops, (especially those serving over sees).
I would like to bring up several points:
1.) I served 12 years in the United States Army Reserve.
2.) I didn't do it for the money.
3.) I enlisted for one reason. That is to serve my country.
4.) Since I listed the above reasons, I would also like to add that people do not join the military to get rich. We enlist in the United States military because of a feeling of loyalty and honor to serve our country.
5.) Lastly, I would like to add that since you never served in the United States military, you have absolutely no FRIG GEN idea what the hell you are talking about.
Freedom is not Free. Someone had to fight for it.
Sincerely,
Sgt. Lisa E. Grant
