What's It Worth?

Time out for a reality check

Uploaded on January 27, 2012

I just thought I'd mention that no matter how much we all might disagree on many political issues we do agree on some very fundamental other issues. Mainly that hunting and fishing are a good thing.

Seeing some anti hunters wander onto the comments sections on the front page reminded me. I hunt with guys that are probably more Republican than half of you all. We share about 99.9% of the same values.

Then how can you support liberalism when there are many liberal groups that would outlaw hunting, and fishing in a heart beat?

With all the rhetoric that shows up in the backlash message board, I rarely bother checking in on this one. I am interested in talking about the outdoors, not arguing about [insert highly charged political opinion here].

That being said, Rock Rat is right, Most of the time, at least on most issues, most outdoorsmen tend to agree.

There are just as many conservatives who cause problems as there are liberals - they just tend to to cause different kinds of problems. The extreme ends of the political spectrum will never agree with one another. It's up to the rest of us to make the best of things.

I would also mention that the hunting and fishing that we enjoy today are remarkable. The pollution and environmental distruction that was rampant in this country is now a point by point problem that we can attack and correct. The walleyes and steelhead that Hoski fishes for are found in a watershed that was declared "dead" in the early 70s. Today that watershed is certainly alive and thriving. The population has more than doubled and the opportunity to hunt and fish and observe what my generation considered to be wilderness species is unprecedented. Sometimes I wonder whether the question is about how full the glass is? As a biologist in my 60s who expected that the only wildlife to be found at this point in time would be starlings and pidgeons and house sparrows, with only carp in the water I am amazed at our bounty. To me the glass is over 90% full.

Not I. We are losing a lot of habitat for one. And the divisiveness in this country has created lots of "No Trespassing" signs. Few want anything to do with their neighbors, and they have a big fear of what their govt. is up to. But the key is the economy. And we are headed in the wrong direction unfortunately. Programs will go unfunded, inflation will rear its ugly head, and put many outdoor activities out of the financial range of the ave. person. And the over-regulation drives a lot of outdoor enthusiasts to simply quit. And that is the intention of those who want to over regulate. Just look at Europe, and their public lands and waters. We are headed in that direction, and many want us to head in that direction.

I've had some casual liberal friends over the years. They throw some of the most wild and creative house parties! For close friends I prefer conservatives. It takes extra effort having a liberal friend because they are so easily worked up if certain subjects are discussed.

Rock Rat, I bet you and I would get along well in outdoor activities. I agree with 99% of your posts concerning hunting.

I hope the 1% includes Rock Rat's desire to only use lead free bullets. That has California Crazy all over it. Says he only takes close range shots, so forget about the other folks. It suits him fine.

Clinch if you found yourself in an empty room you'd have an argument talking to yourself.

Yup, I use lead free to hunt, but I sure don't tell others they should, and I'm not at all sure that leaded bullets harm any condors, I just choose to because I've little kids who love to eat heart. Target and plinking is always lead. Yup only close shots because after 100 yds I'm not so accurate. I'm not so much ethical, just hate chasing animals all over the countryside.

I'm from the intermountain west.

Pig your hog hunting sounds like the epitome of pure fun, nothing but hunting respect for all you folks that hunt, especially big dangerous things, 007 chases bears around with dogs for fun?? Crazy or what?

Thanks Rat.

I agree with your lead free reasoning. Most of my animals have been taken with a .308 using Barnes X-bullets. I don't like bullet fragmentation and prefer through and through shots. I've noticed that copper jacketed lead bullets will fragment and often will not exit. Tried Remington CoreLoks this year and did not like having to wash fragmented pieces of the bullet out of the meat.

I still use the lead core bullets because I got tired of loading loads with the Barnes bullets trying to get them to shoot. I may be wasteful but from my earlier posts everyone knows I shoot all of my deer through the shoulders and I cut all of the meat off of the shoulders that has been affected by the bullet, therefore getting rid of any lead that may be in the meat. This being said I don't think there is any chance of me or anyone in my family getting lead out of any deer that I kill. If the shoulder is torn up too much I get rid of the whole thing getting rid of all of the bullet ridden meat. This may seem wasteful by some but I take no chances because I have grandkids that eat my deer meat. I use bonded bullets in my 300WSM and they don't shed as much lead as some of the regular bullets do as they pass clear through the animal.

I used to like liberal women, but that was back in the 60's when they were very promiscuous other than that they were and still are pretty useless.
