THe large ones can weigh 40+ pounds
Nate
They can be as long as 5 or 6 feet and Nate is right, over 40 pounds.
Pretty big depending on how big of elk you get.
my 5x5 this year is probibly about 2.5 to 3 feet from the skull to the tip. I found a match pair of 6x6 sheds under a tree first year out, they are at least 4 feet long, probibly went 3 feet wide at least at the tips when attached to the bull.
If you happen to own a fairly small horse imagine shooting him, quartering him up and hauling him home. Typical elk antlers do indeed weight about 20 pounds give or take 5 or so. It is difficult to manage getting the critter out of the mountains without the help of horses, mules, or fourwheelers if you hunt where the latter can be used. Tough on your back without this assistance. I tend to only shoot 6 x 6 bulls or larger as I have never killed a B & C high rated elk and would certainly like to accomplish this before I go to the big elk wallow in the sky. You can't kill a big one if you settle for a small one.
Let me clarify that the "20 pounds give or take" is per side or per antler not both.
they are pretty big depending if its 1 year old or a bull
My last was a heavy beamed Roosevelt 6x5. I was about to saw them from the skull when my partner stopped me, insisting the head stay intact for a bleached skull mount. I told him, if I'm packing this rack the skull stay's. He insisted, so he packed the rack. I'm quite sure he's cured of packing the head and antlers in the future. He ranted the whole way out of the timber!
I was packing in front of him, grinning the whole way.
