Bird Hunting

14 month old weimeraner

Uploaded on September 06, 2009

I just received a 14 month old Weim, He has been taught most of the early commands like sit and stay and will fetch most anything you throw and as long as you want to throw it. My question is he too old to teach to hunt ?

Not too old in my opinion. Have at it. Remember, back in the early days they wouldn't start training a dog until it was 1 years old.

Start soon. I didn't get to train my Weimaranter until she was over a year old because she was injured as a pup. She turned out okay, but mostly because I didn't want to get rid of her and didn't want to get another dog. It took a little extra time.

I've seen dogs a lot older than that started on hunting. As long as it already knows who's boss, should be easy moving to the next step. See if you can get someone to supply you with a bird wing from a duck or pheasant to get it used to retrieving something with feathers.

As long as the dog has the prey drive and will to please it can happen. One of the best dogs ive shot over was a rescued GSP that was around 3 years old.

I don't think that it is to old to train. It might be a little harder than when it was younger but you still can do it.

I must say, I agree, the breed has the genes in it to hunt, not that I am expert on Weim. but the gentleman that trains me to train my dog is, his comment would be, if it has it in his genes to hunt, point, retrieve, the dog will do it. Once you find the little trick, that makes the dog want to hunt and listen to the pack leader ie you, then you have cracked it.
For me, I don't speak much to my dog when working, its all done by the whistle...
Good luck
