Bird Hunting
Hey all,
I'm currently in medical school and have a lot of demands on my time. Any recommendations for a bird dog that's a great house pet and can do adequate on a once in a while hunt? I grew up hunting over labs.

Labs all the way! A good dog for upland and waterfowl you just cant beat a good Lab.
I have had nothing but labs all my life. They are great in your lap or in the blind and usually pretty quiet, especially if they're raised in the house. Brittany spaniel is also a lovely dog and great hunter. They're smaller so might work well if you're in an apartment situation. Unlike a lot of the spaniel/setter breeds, brittanys are not as inclined to be roamers. Some folks a few blocks down had a really nice one for several years. No fence and on a busy street but day after day that dog never left the yard. Both breeds are generally very anxious to please.
Any breed will put a lot of demands on your time when a pup. Keep it in a crate in the house during the day when you're gone so the place isn't destroyed of covered with poo when you get home (or the neighbors fed up with the noise of crying dog). After about a year and a half the pup will graduate to roaming the house when you're at school/work. You're obviously a bright guy/gal, so I think that you will be able to handle the demands that a pup will put on you and still be able to keep up with your career. When you're living alone, the contributions that a lovely pup can make to your life and mental health certainly outweigh the minor drawbacks. Always remember, no pain no gain. If you have any questions along the way, I think this is a good place to go with them.
