Bird Hunting
So Im doing the college process and I would love to go somewhere where there is good duck hunting, good people, and most of all people who hunt! I live in a yuppy town and Im sick of it I need some people that hunt to talk to, suggestion would be helpful! I needa get out of this yuppy ville and into the real life!
In what will you major? Do you want to start out at a junior college or 4 year college? I attended Itasca Community College in northern Minnesota. Itasca county has over 1,000 lakes! Lots of public land and hunting and fishing opportunities. I also attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This is the largest college of natural resources in the nation. Less hunting and fishing opportunites, but a very diverse mix of people. For good people I would focus on the midwest. We are very hardworking, down to earth, and welcoming. For hunting and fishing opportunities I would focus on areas with low population density and high proportions of public land. I have also heard that those who attended college in the northern rockies area really enjoyed it. But don't sacrifice your education for it. This day and age you need a top notch education to compete in "real life".
Not sure where you live and how far away you are looking to move from home, but Murray State university is right beside Land Between the Lakes state park and has great hunting/fishing all around. The Ballard Co. WMA, and Realfoot Lake are both within an hour drive and are have some of the best duck hunting around. Personally I went to WKU in Bowling Green because the school suited me and my major, but I live near Murray now, and the hunting and fishing in the area is great.
Paul Smiths College In NY,Right smack in the middle of the 'Dacks, we have an armory, live right on a lake, surrounded by public lands, and alot of duck, geese, deer, and other hunters, with fishermen, small campus with alot of us rednecks, hicks, country folks, and lots of other good people and sportsmen/women.
Look across the border. Canada has excellent heavily subsidized post-secondary and graduate schools that are relatively cheap even with non-resident tuition. U of Manitoba is an excellent institution. Did my PhD there. You may have to drive a bit to get out of town to the hunting and fishing though. I fished about two hours NW of the city this past summer and it was FANTASTIC. Elk, bear, deer, and waterfowl hunting are also unbelievable. U of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon is a great school in a beautiful city (one of the nicest places to live in Canada). Fishing and hunting is right out the back door there, as it is in Thunder Bay, Ontario (Lakehead University). There is in fact more water than land in District of Thunder Bay. Within a three hundred mile radius you could probably fish a different lake every weekend throughout the year for a couple of decades. Minnesota is no comparison!
