Deer Hunting

Antiqe European Mount for less than $50, in less than 30 mins.

There are many per-manufactured skulls out there available for mounting sheds, but the best that I have found is "Mountain Mike's". They all come bleached white, which, if paired with weathered sheds or worn antlers, does not look authentic.I use this technique to mount shed antlers, but it will work just fine with any type of antler that still has a full base with the burr (the curl that encircles the antler at the base of the skull). You will need a few different colors of spray paint, usually antique white, copper, and a green if want to best match the coloration of sheds (they usually have picked up some green mold from laying in the dirt). You can choose any color you like. I usually use textured paint, which gives the skull a look and feel like very fine sand paper. A gloss or satin clear can be used if you want to add a shine, but I leave mine matte. The process is very simple. Begin with the antique white base to cover the entire skull. Then use whatever colors you choose to add "age" spots. Once its dry, follow the skull manufactures instructions for mounting your antlers. As a side note, the most critical step in mounting the antlers is to make sure you drill the holes at the correct angle so that you will drill right down the center of the main beam. You can split these just like wood if you are not careful. So take your time and line it up right the first time. Good luck and enjoy!
