Deer Hunting

Disapointed with Remmington Core-Lokt® Ultra Bonded®

Uploaded on November 23, 2009

Ok - I've just shot my largest deer (9 point) this past saturday with 30-06 165g, Core-Lokt® Ultra Bonded® at about 30yds. The deer went down after taking two steps, but the problem was the bullet passed right through him leaving a clean hole - no expansion. Was that because of the range? I'm glad I put it where I did, otherwise he might have gone a long ways. Anyone got any insight?

What did it do to the vitals? Obviosly shredded something if he only went 2 steps. Perhaps if you did not hit bone, there was not enough impact to initiate expansion. However, it may have expanded inside and cut a clean hole on the way out due to it's high velocity as I would guess it was still moving well over 2,700 fps at 30 yards. I'd say you had a perfect bang-flop!

Sounds like the round did it's job, it dos'nt have to leave tremendous shock trauma to the exit to pulverize the eternal organs. I've had balistic tips blow thru with little visible damage to entry or exit, come to find out the shock trauma blew a 4 inch cylinder of tissue damage from rib cage to rib cage and still punching out through a 1/4 inch exit, go figure.

Maybe you should try Federal Vital Shok's.
Or maybe not if you want to eat what you shoot !
Ask the bobcat I shot on Sat. !

Im not sure that happened, i just use the plain core-lokt soft points and they seem to expand pretty well.

WA Mtnhunter - Yes, I hit both lungs and clipped the heart. And it was a perfect bang-flop with no bones hit. I guess I had expected to see a small entry hole and a larger exit wound. Happy hunting and hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!

I don't know much about the Ultras, but wonder if perhaps they're not too hard for whitetails, perhaps intended for larger game with more body mass? Just a thought there. As to the old standby standard corelokts, I have yet to have a negative experience with them on white tails.

I have never heard any deer complain after being shot with a Remington Core Lokt of any description. My father in law killed many a deer and a few elk with .30-06 Core Lokts, not the ultra's either. Deer aren't very hard to kill. You just have to hit 'em in the right spot, that's all!

I've used the core lokt softpoints for many years without any problems. Bt the key is the dear took only 2 steps, I would say the bullet, the gun and the shooter did their job perfectly.
