Deer Hunting

H&R 12ga Slug gun

Uploaded on August 11, 2011

I just bought one of these as I have some hunts I am doing that are shotgun only. Anybody got one? Whats yours like to shoot? How do you like it? I got it so cheap I figured it'd be worth a shot.

"Whats yours like to shoot" as in what slugs?

Have had mine for 5 years - here in Ohio, gun season is a shotgun only deal. This slug gun shoots like a rifle! I was very impressed by the first group I shot. My gun does very well with Federal Barnes Expander Sabots - the tipped ones shoot tighter groups at 200 yards (yes I said 200 yards - with a shotgun!) but the hollow points are devastating. I dropped an 8 pointer in his tracks at 160 yards with the hollow point; made a great kneeling shot on a larger 8 pointer at 225 yards!! he did not go far. I only took the shot because I felt that confident in my ability as well as the gun's.

I forgot to mention, I have the H&R Ultra Slug Hunter - it has a fully rifled BULL BARREL with a bushnell 3-9X40. This is not the H&R slug gun with the rifle sights - this barrel is huge and heavy, but it shoots!

I can't speak to the H&R with the BULL BARREL. I have a word of caution in regards to the H&R Ultra Light Model sb1s14 12 GA & also Remington had a hand in making this gun that was who I returned 2 of them to as directed by H&R via phone. Long story I got 2 guns one for myself & one for my brother as a gift. Both guns had failed to eject shell casing after fired be it 3' or 2 3/4' we had to use cleaning rod to push shells out. We shot Remington Accutip sabot slugs in both sizes same deal they stuck & no group on paper kicks like a sob. Then tried Lightfield sabot slugs 2 3/4 got a group then a few shots later bam my brothers scope rail with scope & rings still on rail fly off the gun (holy hell) he was lucky he did not get hurt. I look now to see they have my guess glued or soldered the scope rail to the gun barrel that says cheap to me. Drill & tap with screws holding is the only way to go IMHO. That's all it took lots of wasted money on ammo to slow of a twist in the barrel and no good groups with several ammo both returned for a refund. Now if you want my advice I would do this in fact I did do this! Go get a T/C Omega inline muzzleloader. I know what your thinking a muzzleloader ?? Really me & my brother now own this fine gun with thumb-hole stock in a ss barrel. The z5 version is just as good & can be had for much less then any slug gun of quality. I am not a great shot have owned all sorts of shotguns all my life win model 12 rem 870 & some 16 & 28 GA guns but with the help I found here http://www.chuckhawks.com/index2h.muzzleloader.htm & after 1 trip to the range with this gun. I would take shots at 125+ yards that's a long shot for me & I have no doubt this gun will walk off from most any shotgun. Range & accuracy will blow your mind coming from a shotgun to this in the right hands it could go out to 200+ easy recoil is nothing like a shotguns be it a pump action heavy shotgun light to very light shotgun. If you can shoot a 22 pick up a inline use it in shotgun or muzzleloader season or both. Some states like Iowa have no restriction on inline muzzle loaders scope it if that's the case. We both use the TC Omega 90 gr by volume aka > using a powder measure not weighing of powder on a scale! We shoot Blackhorn 209 its not smokeless powder that can get confusing if you are new to muzzleloading it is the best powder & safe for inline muzzleloaders very clean stuff. Cci # 209m shot shell primers not the special muzzle loader primers need mag primers for that powder & Barnes Spit-Fire T-EZ bullets with supplied sabot the bullet weight is 250gr we can both hold touching bullet holes all day offhand with this setup at 100 yards. Oh & scope is Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 shotgun/muzzle loader scope with PRW Low rings. Guns clean right up with hoppes no 9 or any oil based gun cleaner. Never use water to clean if you shoot blackhorn 209 & never use more then 120gr powder measured in a powder measure. 1st time shooting Omega Older guy at range sighting in a deer slayer laughed a bit seeing us at 100 yards range with muzzleloader we had just moved from the 50 yard we sighted about 2' high was going in same hole only using sandbags at 50! Now at 100 yard range we setup to take a shot the guy brings his paper over from the 50 yard range he never seen us shoot he had just got there had a group of 3 shots was a nice group but not touching. I never said anything about it I just said very nice. He looks at our guns & says that's a ways out for a muzzleloader just hit what you aim at. I explain we just got to 100 yards he laughs says good luck with that one boys. We watch my brother take aim he is a fairly good shooter but no pro. 2 down range dirt fly's both times the guy says you missed I seen the dirt fly we all head down to take a look could not see in scope if he had hit. We forgot spotting scope ^^ and all shots cut same hole 1/2' above center of bull from sand bags at 100 yards. My gun did about the same the guy said after that well I seen folks shoot high power rifles at 400 yards same hole all day he shot 3 more at 50 and left... All I said in reply to that was you betcha them hp rifles can shoot a long ways. I would not try past 150 with this gun in my hands tho. We will never look back I know I won't. Sorry for the long post Hope this helps Be safe Good luck.

I bought the 12ga. ultra light for my grandson at gander mountain. his parents decided not to let him have a gun. I paid $191 for the gun with tax. I took it back to gander mountain and tried to return it because it was to much gun for me. they would not let me return it, that is their policy. So I asked to exchange it for a 20 ga. that I could better use. They offered me $110 for it. the only time the gun was out of the box was 3 days before when I bought it so they could confirm the serial number. They would not work with me at all. Last thing I will ever buy from Gander Mountain.!!!!!!!!!!!

We have the H&R Handi in .243 Remington, .45-70 Government, and in 20 gauge. All shoot well and we've had no issues other than the .45-70 has noticable recoil. A LimbSaver slip-on pad tamed the .45-70's recoil.

Shooting the 12 gauge ultralight with slugs would kick the fool out of you and your scope. No surprise you had issues.
