Deer Hunting
Hey guys I am from Massachusetts and I wanted to tell you what happened to me in New Hampshire the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The Massachusetts deer season is pretty short for shotgun and primitive firearms so we went up to New Hampshire. We were walking on a deer trail found a very, very fresh scrape right next to thick cover so my Dad and I split up. I sat on this rock and within 15 minutes I started the aggressive grunt call while my dad sat about 100 yards away from me. About 45 minutes later, a big New Hampshire 6-Point came storming in out of the cover about 15 yards away from me. I raised up my Browning BAR .30-06, put the sights on his lungs and turned the safety off. My heart is beating like crazy at this point because this was the first buck I have ever called in so close and I was finally going to harvest my first buck. However, when I pulled the trigger, the pin hit the cartridge and it did not go off. Mr. 6-Point heard the click and ran away with his butt shaking in my face. I cycled another bullet in but by the time I did, the buck was long gone. I am still devastated from this because it was going to be my first buck, but I still have a chance in the Massachusetts late muzzleloader season when I get back from school tomorrow.Has anyone else ever had this kind of experience or missed there first buck?
Actually, I missed the first shot at my first deer but was able to rack the bolt and hit him with the second shot. He was on the run in a freshly turned Kentucky wheat field so he couldn't get to full speed.
I've never used a BAR but have had a misfire using handloads in my .308 Remington 788 bolt-action. Either my load was bad or the firing pin was stuck / gummed-up and didn't strike the primer hard enough. I had just dropped three pigs as fast as I could work the bolt and would have had a 4th one but for the misfire. As you can guess, I no longer have confidence in that old rifle.
Another time I had a huge buck stop 15 yards away and I couldn't find him in my scope on my .30-06 Remington 742. The buck fever hit me pretty bad and I just pointed the barrel his way and fired cleanly over him. The 742 failed to feed the next round and I had to watch the buck run away. Sold that rifle to a pawn shop...
I had a clean miss on a large running buck at close range when he stopped for a second. I racked the bolt pretty fast and had a jam. I watched this huge buck, would still be my biggest, walk off looking back occassionally, seemingly knowing the danger was over. By the time i got the spent shell out which had not fully ejected and was jammed by the next round, I heard a shot just over the hill in the direction he had headed. Would've been my first.
It happens to every deer hunter! It happened to me last year and hopefully I never will but most likely itll happen just dont let it get to you and get back out there soon! Good hunting
I shot a nice 6 this season. Had tips of antlers broken off, and when we scalped him he had another bucks antler embedded in his forehead.
I missed my first buck fourteen years ago now, fortunately for me he stopped broadside again and I was able to calm myself and make a good clean shot. One of the first years I lived in MT I was walking ridges and spotted a nice buck working a doe below me. He looked at me right as I put the crosshairs behind his shoulder, click and he was gone. Took the rifle to a range the next day and fired off a box of shells no problem, put that shell in and click. That unfired shell is actually still sitting on my computer desk all these years later, a trophy from one that got away.
very first year, i went deer hunting in kansas i was 11 and carried my neighboors marlin 30-30. First morning i was sitting along a thicket almost up inside a cedar tree, by a corn field. heard some noises behind me and out popped a doe. my heart was pumping although i didnt shoot at er. then all of a sudden a giant 12 pointer stepped out and me being inexperieneced jumped up and popped a shot off. missed straight broadside 15 yards max. Still shaking my head to this day, but oh well. Thats why its called hunting and not killing.
Na, dont be ashamed every one has missed one before!! Same for me today!!!
YOU GUYS HAVE TO HEAR THIS STORY! i was out on opening day and all the surrounding land owners and myself have been seeing this big buck, a ten huge mass, a 155+ deer. i saw him once bow hunting on the last weekend of the season and finally the shotgun season came around with no one getting him. so on opening day i had a stand in a spot where he has been seen multiple times. so at first light i was sitting in my stand when i all of a sudden hear walking and there he was the big ten right there coming over the ridge right to me. i pulled up my scoped 870 and put the cross hairs right on his chest and stopped him BROADSIDE 35 yards away i clicked the safety off and settled those cross hairs on his chest AND .....
woke up
This is my third hunting season,Im forty five and Ive yet to even pull the trigger on one,at least you had the chance so thats not anything to be ashamed of. keep on getting your hunt on.I know I will be out in the woods tomorrow looking for that first chance.
I lost my first deer too. It was the first night of deer season and we went to a spot were we alawys see deer. Sure enough right before dark a nice 8 point came walking toward us in the wheat field. He was just about to go into the trees when he turned broadside to us and my dad said shoot. It was a pretty far shot about 300 yards but I hit him. We could see him runnin away and sometimes he'd fall but he always get back up. After about 5 miniutes he was out of sight. I went after him while my dad drove the truck to the other side of the wheat field. I did see him once on the horizon. He was licking his side were I had shot him. I could've shot him then but he was on a hill and I couldnt see what was behind him and it wouldnt have been a safe shot.I ended up that season shooting an even bigger 8 point so I guess it turned out alright.I also lost a realy nice 8 point this year too. He was walking straight at me at the same place that i lost my first deer. When we knew he wasnt stopping I shot him right in the neck at 50 yards. We walked up to him and I could see the bullet hole. he started trying to get up so we backed up and were just going to let him bleed out when about 5 miniutes later he got up and ran off. We did see him a couple times after that but never got another shot. That season we never got another buck. But we did find a great deer spot for next year and we shot two does there and if it had been buck season i couldve shot a nice 12 pointer.
thanks guys, hopefully a big buck comes next season
