Deer Hunting

More Fawns Than Normal?

Uploaded on October 21, 2009

I have been hunting for over 20 years and I can't remember a year when I have seen as may fawns as I have this season. As an avid archer, I like to take my fair share of doe for the freezer, but almost every doe I have seen this year has had one or more fawns with her. I'm not talking one or two sightings. I'm talking almost every time out over a course of 14 trips to about 5 different locations. Maybe it's where I'm hunting, or a middle TN thing. We did get plenty of rain this year. I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this during archery season.

Have you seen many predators such as coyotes and even hogs? The fawn population is controlled by these predators, and their absense may be the cause of the fawn population. You might want to ease up on your coyote calling! :D

I don't think we have a shortage of coyote in my area. I heard one howling as I was leaving my stand last saturday night. We do not have wild hogs in our area, so I don't know what the deal is. I'm not going to complain about lots of fawns though, because that just means the future is bright. Thanks for the reply.

Oh, ok. Yeah, just take it as a blessing. It is good that there are so many fawns, but also remember that having too many deer, while it seems way cool, can be a bad thing on forests and in the end, the population itself. So, keep things checked and balanced.

I would start a hunting journal if I were you so that you could record these observations. I started a journal this year, and I can't wait to see what happens over the next couple of seasons.

I have not noticed that. I have seen a large Doe with two fawns on a few occasions in a couple different areas within the same piece of woods which is not that large. I'm not sure if it's the same 3 or not.

We have a heavy population of deer, and mild winters, so a large percentage of our fawns make it every year. I am still seeing a lot of doe with fawns, but the spots are gone. We are allowed to kill 3 doe a day here. Plenty of meat for the freezer. I have taken 3 doe so far. Happy hunting
