Deer Hunting
I live in South Georgia. I wanted to come hunt Alabamas public land for mature buck. Any suggestions about when peak rut and advice on which public area to hunt would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Anytime in mid January is good. I live in north east alabama and the closest public land to me is the chocoloc reserve near piedmont.
The Alabama rut varies because the deer were re-populated from different Northern states. For most of Alabama, the peak of breeding season, or the rut, occurs around mid- to late January. Barbour WMA has had antler restrictions in place for several years and the harvest report says antler development is good there.
I don't hunt Barbour WMA anymore because it can get crowded on the scheduled gun days. If you decide to try it I suggest you go early to scout out the most inaccessable, thickest spot you can find with good deer sign. On the hunting day, get your permit from the check-in station early, get to your spot, and let the other hunters drive the deer to you. Last season the harvest averaged out to about 12 man-days of hunting per kill. Good luck, have fun, and be safe!
