Deer Hunting

need help choosing a bow

Uploaded on September 25, 2011

ive been bow hunting for a few years now and ive decided its time to upgrade from my old fred bear bow. that being said, what do i choose. ive been looking at the bear charge and it looks like a good inexpensive bow. for 399 you can get the ready to hunt package. would you choose the bear or some other brand id really like to keep it under 500 dollars and sight and all the extras would be a big bonus any info on options as far as single or double cam would help greatly thanks for any help in advance.

I only hear good things of bear bows. I am a hoyt guy but they are a little more than the price range. So if bear fits you good and you shoot the old one good, than I feel do not change what is working for you. best of luck.

diamond razor edge 2.0. great bow, been shooting for 9 months and great as any other bow. about 350 for ready to shoot package. just as good as any other bow out there, puts the deer on the ground in one shot. thats all that matters

It's too difficult to give you a good answer to this question. I highly recommend you go see an archery pro at one of the outfitting stores like Gander Mountain, Sportsman Warehouse, Bass Pro, etc. I shoot the Bear Carnage. It's their top of the line bow. The things I look for in a bow include weight and compactness for ease of carrying in the woods; speed (e.g. 300+ fps) for accuracy, silencing for stealth, and let-off (e.g. 80%) so you can hold a shot. An archery pro will fit you up with a bow that works for you in your price range. Or, find one that's a bit more...test it out.. shoot it at their range, and then go to craig's list. You will find a great bow at a lower price. If you go used, make sure you take it in to a pro to fit it for you. Draw length, sights, kissers, peeps, alignment, etc. need to be right on.

I would not even dare to compare a diamond to any bear, hoyt, or mattews because it will be out preformered in any category. Cobowhunter is right as far as all the tips although I would say stay away from the big shops like bass pro, cabelas, etc. and find a small local guy because he will know ten times as much as a rule and you will get better service. Lastly do not worry about speed. My sister uses a 40 pound alpine that shoot 200 foot per second and kills deer constantly. The slower the bow is the more accurate/ forgiving it is. Mine shoots 317 fps and that is way more than I need. Just find one thathas legal specs that feels good and you can not go wrong. Shoot placement is key not speed, energy, or anything else. Lastly to Tyler the only bow I see droping deer in their tracks would be the .300 win bow aka. win mag. Any bow drops them if you spine them or hit the front shoulder just right but no bow just drops them without hiting or injuring the spine.

I found a good archery pro at Bass Pro and at Sportsmen Warehouse. Although, of all the big outfitter shops, the best I have seen are at Gander Mountain.

I shoot a PSE Bow Madsness XS. i bought the RTH package at bass pro for $600 i think. its a little expensive but its a great bow. its fast shooting, accurate and i can shoot a 1.25" group out to 60yards. I've had no problems with PSE and ive owned 2 of them. A PSE Brute and My PSE Bow Madness XS
