Deer Hunting

Scent Control

Uploaded on November 09, 2009

I got busted this weekend by a deer that smelled me just before walking into range.

I had put out some doe-in-estrus pee and think that may have played a role in attracting the deer but it seems unavoidable to me that the smell of the pee and my smell are going to be carried in the same direction by the wind.

I was wearing Scent-Lok clothing and sprayed myself with a scent eliminating solution. (Because I don't have a nose like a deer, I always wonder how well all this scent-control stuff works, if at all.)

Anyone out there have some thoughts/advice on this matter that they care to share?

I use scent eliminating products religiously as well as store my clothing all by itself in a container lots of times with leaves. I very rarely get busted by scent. With that said I am also pretty cautious about wind direction when placing my stands or blinds. But nothing is a for sure set up in my mind.

Showering with scent free soap before hunting, and washing your clothes with scent free detergent are the most important in my opinion.

Put scent in both directions so deer coming in will get a good nose of it before they get your scent. Know where your wind is so you can shoot before he gets to it, if possible.

carbon clothing certainly cant hurt. Ive had good luck with scent wafers for cover scent, i store all my gear in a bin with a few wafers in it, and i also open a can of them when im in the stand. I also wash my stuff a few times a year in scent killing detergent and try to shower in the stuff if possible.

Wash your hunting gear in baking soda. No soap, just baking soda. shower with it too.

Thanks for the advice, I like the baking soda idea instead of using the overpriced stuff specifically designed to take money out of the pocket of a hunter.

I got busted when I was sitting in a natural ground blind (with some enhancement by me) - I put a stand nearby and had better luck - didn't take a bow shot but watched one little buck walk right by under my stand without getting busted. I actually think getting up off the ground was the most important thing I did to keep from getting busted.

I filled my buck tag using a Mossberg 500 with a slug barrel on opening weekend of the firearm season so I can't take another buck this season, but I am hoping to get a doe with my bow after the firearm season ends.
