Deer Hunting
I'm hunting new property (un-hunted for at least 5 years) this weekend. There are several wooden stands on the property but there's no tellin how solid or safe they are until you are actually in them. What suggestions does everyone have? Should I try an old wood stand or just sit on the ground? I've always hunted out of stands before but wondered what kind of chance I would have at a buck from ground hunting?
Safety first, I'd say. Also I'm wondering the answer to the question you have about ground hunting success rate as well. I think a lot (maybe most) deers hunters stand hunt, but that sounds like you'd have to have a lot of patience
Just play the wind and MAKE SURE to have enough cover behind you to break up your outline, or a ground blind. Just have to be very careful with your movements
i got my buck out of a ground blind. the only problem was that he disappeared for a while in tall grass that if I was 2 ft higher i could have seen all of his movement
I shot a buck with my bow off the ground last year and it was Awesome, though it's less forgiving than being 20 feet up.
In this particular situation, I would most definitely hunt from the ground! I would not trust any of the wooden stands on the property you are hunting. You did not build the stands. You do not know how they were built. Stay put in one place, move as little as possible and, yes, you will have a chance of harvesting a buck while hunting on the ground. During the years, I have taken many bucks while hunting on the ground.
One of the last fatalities I had while working was a hunter that found a old wooden stand and crawled up in it and it colasped and his buddies found him dead at the bottom. If you did not build the atand and know the absolute condition DON'T go into the stand.
Stay on the ground. It is really exciting. I shot two does this year just sitting in my turkey hunting chair. I wear my ghillie suit with a camo orange vest over it. Looks silly but the deer can't tell what you are. Hunker into the brush, stay still and get ready for some close encounters.
