So far I've shot a 150lb boar pig and a small whitetail buck. Mostly I've been acting as guide for my wife and she's the one with a rifle. On those days I just tote my .45 LC revolver and a long knife.
didn't even see a doe this year.
My deer season was a bust. Same with bear. Did manage to shoot a turkey in the spring so right now the freezer is echoing and I have to buy a quarter of a bison just to eat. D'oh! I will just have to take it out on the coyotes this winter.
Here's to next year!
I managed a small buck during our buck season and a large doe during the muzzleloading season. Was going to kill a doe the last day of season but there wasn't even a bird stiring in the woods.
The only shooter bucks i had in bow range didn't offer me a shot. Saw far fewer deer than normal, which led me to seek out a new spot, which has promise(see pics). Looking back i wish i had taken a doe early season. I still have a couple weeeks of late bow season but my hunting will be limited.
We've been seeing plenty deer despite the warm temps and winds. I've been hunting my two favorite WMA's long enough to know where there's better chances of seeing game. My hunting buddy has killed three does in the spots I've directed him to hunt. So far my wife has not shot a deer so that's why I backed off from carrying my rifle. It will mean more to me to have her shoot one. Our gun deer season lasts for another three weeks. After that, I'll hunt pigs till mid March.
Ive seen lots of deer through out my season, but couldent manage to get a shot. However, i learned more about their movement than i could have ever have hoped. My season ends sunday, then ill hunt preadators and small game,(plus sheds) than turkeys in april. As for deer, theres always next season.
I shot a 125 pound boar in September and a nice doe in October's muzzleloader season.
Drew on a couple does at 15 and 25 yds tonite. The 15 yder was face on, the 25 yder was broadside with a branch across her vitals. After about a minute or two they turned and ambled off without either presenting a solid shot and i had to let off my draw. Fun though.
I got three this season a big doe a small buck and a nice 10 pointer. I've seen a whole lot this season (not just deer). And I've been very fortunate to hunt as much as I was able to.
I know this won't go well with some, but when did it become mandatory that in order to have a good season you had to pull the trigger or release the arrow? It should be about the experience, with a bag limit as a bonus.
You are right 007, I hunted more days this season that I ever have in my life and left several tags unfilled but took a bunch of pictures. When you sit in a stand and look at your firearm for days and days at a time from daylight to dark that is why it is important to have a good looking pretty firearm to admire. I do believe that our buck to doe ratio is a little better than it has been the last few years, what are you all seeing ? I sure did need one more for jerky the grandkids have wiped me out.
We've seen two fat little forkies together in our one field twice now, saw a very nice 8 pt. in a neighbor's yard 2 miles down the road a week or so ago, saw a decent rack buck in the edge of the headlights about 10 minutes down the road in Virginai this past Saturday morning, and I hear that a big boy in that same general area made it thru. Daughter and I were in on treeing several bear, took loads of pictures and never pulled the trigger but our dogs did better than they had before, and some of those young bucks in the bunch about walked me to death a couple of times and I made it back to my truck, so it was a successful season spent with folks who mean a lot to me.
I have had a pretty good season, A doe with my in-line, a 9pt with my 300saum, a doe with my 25-06 and one more with my flintlock.
Well put 007! While I did not put any meat in the freezer which kind of bums me out I did have a great time in the field. I tried bear hunting for the first time and finally shot a turkey. Sitting in the woods beats the couch any day and good times with family and friends are priceless.
Called in a coyote on Tuesday that sat and talked to us for almost 20 min without showing himself. Sure got my heart beating though.
Happy hunting to you all!
Thanks, Chuckles. Planning any fishing trips yet? My son and I are starting to think trout, cats, and bass, perhaps even a distant walleye safari. If you get over this way again this summer let me know, I'll tell you how to run me down.
No deer this year. I saw only two bucks, one was out of range and the other was not a shooter in my book. Deer were scarce in NW CO this year for us.
Hey 007, you're welcome. No firm plans yet but we are talking about doing the Shenandoah trip again this summer. I will definitely touch base if we head that way.
If your walleye search takes you this far I would be happy to return your favor and direct you to some of the better fishing in MN. Might even find a chance to wet a line with ya. I don't have a big water boat but I might know of a sneaker spot or two off the beaten path.
Got a button buck with my bow two afternoons ago, thought it was a big doe. Will be smoking some hams and the heart next week, having the tenderloins tonight. Still hunting a big buck that just wont come out when i'm on stand.
I got a spike Blacktail this year. I call it Bambi.
Looks like one of the "boys" is back. We talked about being rid of them too soon.
I had one of my Best with two Hogs #1 167# & 217# 2 bucks 5PtBpowder..6Pt Rifle 1 Old Doe 160# 1 young Doe 144# 1-7' 210# gator, That all the time i have from the Gun Shop, I have an Elk
Hunt in Feb 22 in Kentucky, its a one day hunt.
Today is the last day of winter bow and hence the end of deer hunting till October. Got home from work at 8 a.m. and after the bus comes i'm going golfing. It's sunny and 60 today. May get out for the last hour and try to arrow another for the freezer but my wife may have other ideas.
Golf ??? way to early for that... courses are walk only.... no place for the "kool aid"...
Steve get out there and get that big boy!
steve182,
Here in WV we have been able to play golf this winter like we normally aren't able to do. Today it is 64 degrees. It has been over 50 degrees almost every day. My wife got me a new set of custom hybird clubs for Christmas and I just received them and can't wait to get to the course. Can't get there today have to go to one of my retirement jobs, probably tomorrow. We can even drive the carts almost on every hole on the course .
Was a nice day on the links, though i didn't win any cash. Got some sun and pured a few shots. Putting was pretty poor. Am sorry to not be in my stand right now but it's been a long season and my family at home is glad i'm here. There's always next year(hopefully) and the freezer ain't empty so i have no regrets.
The deer season ended in a whimper for me. The Tombigbee River was in flood stage this past weekend and that kept me out of my favorite swamp. Was going to hunt with a muzzleloader Friday and Saturday. Oh well, it's small game saeson until the end of February...
This year was a brand new experience on a new piece of land we leased. Spent a lot of time learning the lay of the land. I did however pass up multiple smaller bucks and does. We got some beautiful Monster bucks on camera but were unable to seal the deal which i am sure many of you can relate to. Did get a 40 yard shot on a coyote that ended very badly for him and a few does. Great season although I am going through withdraws now that it is over.
Great year here in PA. I shot a 150# doe early in archery, 125" buck last week of archery, another doe with my shotgun and and one more with my rifle. Did 135# of various sausages and jerky too. Several pheasants met their demise by me and my trusty Barley dog too. But the best part of it all? Me and the Mrs. brought home our "young buck" in early November. GREAT year.
I managed to kill my first deer with a bow and it was a big doe with a mathews mustang set at 50lb(its alot im only 13) and i killed a giant 7 it was tall and alot of mass not wide and a nice little eight. i killed the bucks with a remington model 700 .243 sps. i also killed dilllers squirrels doves ducks gators. and a couple turtles and a 250 pound hog with nice dandy cutters.
Every year that I make it out hunting and fishing it’s a successful year. I also got lucky this year by killing a doe and small buck with my bow. I got back into bow hunting after being out of the game for about 10 years and was able to get lucky. I also shot a nice 4 year old 9 point with my rifle. Got a few birds and caught some nice fish too.
