Deer Hunting
My opening two day hunt was really bad...there was a lot of sign of deer but i only saw 3 and the day was real slow becuse usually i'll hear about 100 shots the opening day, i only heard about 25. But now i don't know where to go, I'm not going back to that spot but i still have what i think is a nice state land spot by a private ranch i used to work at. Or i could go out to the pigion river. I now i spelled it wrong but whatever, but there are a crap ton of hunters there. I also don't know the land very well. Should i wander into the big pigeon river forest or go to my other state land hunt spot. I know it's not really a good question based on what i told you but just give me your best advice for a 16 year old hunting on state land. Also where to go...swamp..little fields or hardwoods.
Hey I am in Georgia and new to this. Anyway I love hunting fields but hardwoods would be my second choice. this probally has nothing to do with you and Iam sure you could careless but thats what I like :)
depends on the stage of the rut in your area. if its still pre rut then go for the thick swamp. If they're chasing hardwoods can be great just find a well used doe bedding area or little field where does feed often. And stick to the places you know. Don't go wandering blind into a hunt. Or if its close enough go scout it mid day that would be worth a shot. Just gotta figure out whats out there. I have killed deer by walking into a place at dark and climbing the first good tree i find, but not very often. You will probly have much better luck with a location where you can make an educated guess as to where the deer will come out. Oh, and a topo map will make the unfamiliar spot easier to pick apart.
i prefer to hunt wood lines whenever i can. focus on heavily used game trails and corners of fields...
