Deer Hunting

Where to for next year?

Uploaded on January 08, 2013

Well, time to start planning for next year.

We went to Wyoming this year. Aside from the guides screaming "Shoot, shoot!" in our ears (during those precious moments that deserve quite, focus and respect; a blog thread unto itself), we had a great time.

We do not care one whit for antler size. Good food. Good company. Decent weather. OPEN country. Some deer hither and yon. That's all we ask for.

What state would you go to for that quintessential deer hunt? Where would you go?

Any input appreciated!

From people who Ik have hunted in Iowa and Illinios, I'd say around there, because stands are in wood lots amoungst field, they say they see alot of deer funneled threw them, for spot and stalk, I'd look at Nebraska Mule deer

Kansas has lots of open country, and I've heard it has some deer hither and yon.

My cousin owns a large farm in Indiana where they kill large bucks every year and they have invited me every year to join them. I may have to make the trip from WV to Indiana this year for their muzzleloader season. My cousin killed a real nice 10 point this year. She is the one who usually kills the biggest deer. I think that her 2 sons and husband are a little jealous. They plant alot of soy beans and corn on their farm.

South Texas is warm during deer season, if that's ok with you. Some very nice deer can be found there. Montana would be my choice though. Up around the Milk River you can't throw a rock without hitting big deer. You say that you just want meat. That's fine. Those deer up there are huge and you will get plenty.

Ohio is awesome, but seems like it is too popular(crowded). I think the Dakotas or Minnesota are spots i'd like to hunt deer.

steve182 I have always wanted to try a Black Hills hunt. The hunting here in MN is pretty good and there a some big bucks taken every year. If you ever head this way drop a line. Coffee's always on.

Saskatchewan, Canada. You won't regret it.

Hunt public land or family owned. Please don't go to some deer farm in South Texas that has 15 foot fence all the way around it and guides that try to tell a hunter how to hunt. You will regret it. I had a friend that did one of those paid hunts and he killed the biggest buck he'd ever even seen but after everything settled he said he was happier with the little 6 point he has on his wall than the 12 point he killed on the paid hunt. He said it wasn't hunting at all, you could go out there and throw a rock at the deer and make noises and they wouldn't even spook.... NOT hunting. anyways all states have public land to hunt, just google your state and county!
