Deer Hunting
I'm moving to Ohio soon. Anyone on this site know any "good" hunting/fishing spots on public land/areas you would'nt mind passing on to a fellow hunter from "Down South" ? Thanks in advance, and Good luck and Good hunting/fishing to all.

What part of Ohio are you moving to?
I have had great deal of success in the Hocking Hills area. This would include Hocking State Forest, Wayne National Forest, Tar Hallow, and Zaleski State Forrest. The deer and turkey populations are very high in these areas, and during bow season there is lots of uncrowded public land; gun season can be a differeint story so to beat the crowd I hunt on private land. Fishing is decent across the state as far as I'm concerned. The funny thing about it is I do my best fishing "Down South"
The akron area. But I'm willing to travel, and willing to trade labor for access to private land.
yea i have land behind me but its not mine. i could try to get you the number. if you click my profile and look through my pix there is a pic of the big buck my motion camera got on that land. im only 14 so motion camera permission is as far as ive got.
You'll be good in the Akron area. Within 1 hour you'll have world class steelhead and smallmouth fishing to the North Conneaut, Chagrin and Rocky Rivers, of course Lake Erie, great muskie fishing to the south, Peidmont and Leesville Lake. Lots of public area that have largemouth and panfish.
I would reccomend a boat with less than 10 hp motor. You'll have a lot more access to good fishing on restricted lakes.
As for hunting. Ohio is deer hunters heaven. Just too many of them and we can't kept the numbers down. If you do not have private access I'd go South to the Salt Fork area. Northeast Ohio has many public areas that produce large bucks and turkeys. Off the top of my head I can't name any.
I can be more specific if you tell me what you like to hunt or catch.
Thats "your" spot hunterkid94, you "found" it so Good luck and good hunting to you this year.
Buckhunter I've got a semi-v hull flat bottom w/ a 50hp. so that won't be a problem. I've done ALOT of crappie fishing here in Ark. (Love um'), also done alot of catch and release on some good "smallie" waters down here too. Never have caught steelheads,or muskies(WILLING TO LEARN). I hunted deer up there one season(5yrs ago/private land, buddy has passed now, no access)
Also heard hogs are a problem too, so as to specifics "What Have you got to hunt/fish?, when can we go?(seasons),Limits? What types of weapons can we use? I AM READY FOR ANYTHING !
What buckhunter meant by the 10 HP motor was that many lakes in Ohio have restrictions on motor size, and don't allow the use of any motor over 10 HP. Some lakes even have electric only regulations. This is because all of the lakes in Ohio are man- made and many are shallow, warranting motor size restrictions.
Thanks for the info., know any good areas to hunt or fish up there?
I also live up in the Akron area, there are plenty of places to fish up here, but I think hunting land is limited. Salt fork area holds a lot of deer but it gets too crowded during gun season so I would only bow hunt there, i also believe that West Branch has some areas open to public hunting but have never gone there. I hunt down in Jefferson and Harrison Counties were my family owns seversl peices of land. Hog are only a problem in the southerpart of the state, none up by us yet. If you don't mind me asking where abouts in Akron are you moving.
I'll be bowhunting in Zanesville in November if anybody wants somr company on their private land. Otherwise i'll be on the public stuff
To buckeye, not to sure as of yet, keep checking this post and maybe we can get together for some coffee and storys and maybe plan some trips. To steve182, where is Zanesville?
We have a Blue Devil on line?
Big O. We'll have some great fishing directly between us. I've got a buddy from Arkansas who owns a small farm between us also. Maybe the two of you can spin some southern boy stuff. I've own some of the best deer land in Central Ohio. Maybe we can have a day for the guys on line.
buckhunter,Parden my "redneck" "Blue Devil?", Second, THANK YOU GOD !! What part of Ark is your "buddy" from?
Big O, Zanesville is in SouthEast Ohio.
Thanks steve182, any good hunting down there(public/private land) with owners that will at least talk to you?
Big O. The mascot at Zanesville High School is the Blue Devil. They are the rivals for the local high school here. I was called steve182 a blue devil.
I don't know what part if Arkansas my buddy is from but a finer person you'll never meet. He was a farmer until his wife became ill and had to move to Ohio to be close to her specialist.
When will you be in Ohio?
Sorry to hear about your friends wife(in my familys prayers). I'll be headed up that way around the end of the month. After Memorial Day (I've got some friends/family to see that day).
I'm looking forward to meeting with you.
Big O and buckhunter. I am not from, nor have I ever been to that area, so i'm no blue devil. I'm just tagging along with a few guys who thought it was a good place to kill a big buck with a bow w/o paying for land access, leases, etc. Alledgedly there is great public land hunting there, though i am worried about crowds. As far as private land, I have no connections. A couple of the guys i'm going with went out last month, made some contacts, knocked on doors, etc, but we haven't been granted any access yet. I will spend the first day of my week there putting on some miles, finding stand locations, etc. on public land. Then i'll hunt my ass off and hope luck is on my side. I will surely knock on a few doors, but by november, i'm sure i'll be too late to find private ground access.
Good luck and Good hunting steve182. If you "stick" a big boy please post pics, I'll do the same.
Steve182,
The amish hunt the public land around Zanesville and Coshocton pretty hard. It's not uncommon to see groups of 40 hunters pushing the woods and they do shoot everything in sight. I suggest getting topo maps and hunt the small parcels of public land near private land. It works well.
Either way. There's some good fishing near Akron. We'll have to hook up for muskie.
Amish, thats the folks with the horse/buggys, and good furniture right? You'll have to excuse all the questions, I've led a "sheltered" life as far as "life" above the "Mason/Dixon Line" goes, even though my mom was born in Des Moins Iowa. Me, Born in Colo(did some hunting there) raised in Ark., done some phesents in Iowa a few years ago. You guys have got them there don't you?
buckhunter,
I've never caught a muskie, but would love to. How far from Zanesville are you? Do the amish Bowhunt much? In groups like that? Early November? I have heard that gun season on the public land is high traffic. Hoping archery, at least midweek, is better. I guess i'll steer clear of the horse and buggies. Big O, yes, they make good furniture.
TO buckhunter, just read the "fist-fight" you and tx4ever got into in the backlash blog and had to put in MY two cents. Not trying to defend you or anything just wanted to let him know where he stands with a nother "Southerner". Hope his "views don't jade you to others from the south.
buckhunter, if you liked that one see the last one. I think you know where
Big O,
Both sides of my family are from the South. I've already been jaded.
Sorry to hear that(lol):)
I'll be in Ohio by the end of the month. Not sure where in the Akron area though(not familiar with the area).
Would you guy's be willing to trade some labor for access to a poor ol' country boy from down south?
I do bldg. maintence for a living(main. supervisior) so I can do work at the "house" or on the farm, what ever needs done.
I look forward to your response.Thank you in advance.
Big O,
I've got you covered for deer season. My place is not big but it's loaded with deer. Bow/muzzleloader only please.
Too bad you couldn't get here sooner. Today is the last day of turkey season. I called in two big'uns this morning and took the bigger.
YOU ARE KILLIN' ME !!!!!
I missed two good toms this year. One hung up on me, the other(bigger) tom got taken by my neighbor on a day I had a plumbing
"emergency".(Just because your garbage disposal don't work properly, is NOT an emergency).
Good job on the Tom though.
Are crossbows o.k. ? Sold my last bow to a friend(He's a buddys nephew, 18 and in college so not alot of money.
What are the Muzzle-loader rules up there?
Thank you in advance.
Pheasants? Yeah we have 'em, especially in the NW, but OH isn't much of a pheasant state.
Crossbows are fine to use in Ohio, also you can use in-line muzzle-loaders with scopes in Ohio during the muzzle-loader season our gun season. I can't think of much work I need done around the house now, but I would still be willing to go fishing and possibly take a trip down to my farm in southern Ohio for deer season. Let me know when you have more details about where you will be.
You can, ofcourse, also use more tradtional muzzle-loaders as well.
Buckeye, I'll be in s.w. ohio in early November, hunting public land unless i can nail down some private access. I'd gladly do some farm chores in return for access. Also i have carpentry and masonry skills, though i wasn't planning on bringing those tools, as i'll only be there a week and hope to spend most of it in a tree. I'm flexible though.
I'll be coming "home" at the end of the month.
I've got some friends to see on Mon.(05/25/09), if you know what I mean.
I'll post more here in "camp" that same week.
Thank you both for making me feel welcome so far from home. I look forward to meeting you both.
To buckhunter,
Still wrasslin' with the texans out back, incase you were wondering.
Big O.
I've got everything you need for deer. Bow season is 4 months long in Ohio so there are a lot of bowhunters here. There is no difference between a crossbow and a compound bow in Ohio. I've got plenty of both if you do not have one. If you make it up gun season I have a small arsenal of muzzleloaders. I like my beat up old T/C Renegade so your welcome to those fancy things that shoot shotgun primers.
Hell, we need to talk fishing. There are some great lakes located between us. We'll hook up for some muskie fishing. I hope you like beer because there's a lot more drinking than catching when your muskie fishing.
As far as that goes. Anyone is welcome.
Never caight a muskie before, cousin did when I was young, scared the H#@$ out of both of us.
MMMMMMMMMM Beer GOOD ! (lol).
Looking forward to it see ya soon.
To buckhunter,
Just catching up on stuff and got "word" on your trip.
Good luck, Good fishing, and please be careful out there.
Remember, your going to show me how to catch muskie's up there real soon, and we've got deer and turkeys to chase too.
TAKE PICTURES PLEASE ! See ya soon.
Muskie really are terrifying when you're a little kid.
State record down here is 23lbs/12oz.
I know they get bigger, what's the record/where from up there?
The state record for Muskellunge in Ohio is 55.13 lbs. and is 50.25 inches long. It was caught in Piedmont Lake which is right by my farm. Muskie are fun to catch but I don't fish for them too often.
O M G !!!!!
We got the World records for Walleye(22lb/11oz),Brown Trout(40lb/4oz),and according the rule/regulation book Striped Hybrid bass(27lb/5oz),Ozark bass(1 lb.),Shadow bass(1 lb/13oz) and had the record for Striped sea bass with one that went (64lb/8oz).
New record is a "true" sea bass and it's like 78lb and change.
Save me some fish bud, I'll be there soon.
Big O, I believe you're talking about the world record striped bass? Caught in Atlantic City, NJ, about 15 min from my home, from a jetty on a stormy night in October in the '80's i think. 78lb.12oz if my memory serves me. That's a cow. A 101# striper was caught in a commercial net in the chesapeake, so we know there is another potential world record out there.
Big O,
Let me know when you hit the buckeye state.
It'll be soon now. I wanted to see some friends/relatives yesterday(5/25 know what I mean?
How'd the trip go? I've been striper fishing down here. Not doing to bad. Two trips, 6 fish over 10lbs, and a lg. mouth bass over 4lb, and a channel cat over 10lb.
I''ll drop you a note here as soon as I arrive and "get a lay of the land" to see where we can meet.
Memorial day, i know what yoiu mean big O. Hope yours was a nice one. Same to the rest of you Vets
Thank you steve182, it had been awhile. I hope yours went well too.
buckhunter- If all goes to plan I'll be there around the end of Nov. "Got Deer" ? (lol) When's "seaons" up there. Save me one or two o.k. ? I'll bring some "southern" white-tail and we can do a "taste test (lol). See ya soon !
BigO,
Can't wait to get you into Ohio. I wish the circumstances were different. Hope Chris is doing well. If all goes as planned I should be driving past the clinic tomorrow morning sometime. There is great steelhead fishing in the streams around the lake this time of year. You'll just be getting your feet wet in Ohio during gun season but you should be settled in for muzzleloader season which is near the end of December. Bow season extends to the end of January. Can't wait to get you here.
ME EITHER ! YOU'VE SEEN SIZE OF THEM DEER ! ! (lol) My doe came close but not there. Like the Fla. game ! (lol)
ive hearde wayne national forest is good
heard.............sorry
I'M ON THE WAY !
I'll be there the 23rd through the 28th !
Hope to meet you for at least a cup of coffee !
Forgot to add you can contact me direct at koondog_71@yahoo.com
Sweet! I'll email you.
personally my favorite fishing lake is hoover reservoir in Westerville, it is a 10 horse limit lake so its nice and peaceful as for hunting i like the hocking hills region, wayne national forest, salt fork, there is a lot of farmland and deer are very populated i have found i very easy to get permission to hunt private farms because the deer tear up crops so bad, which also grows em big. i also like hunting in Coshocton and Muskingum counties, this year Ohio's muzzleloader season is actually moved back 2 weeks and is in mid january.
I found the hunting to be very good, although the standing corn was a problem in november. I'll be back.
Hey Steve,
Remember the 9pt we saw bedded near the road? I had him walk under me yesterday. I saw 3 nice bucks and 2 smaller bucks that day. He would be dead now except I have my sights on the big 10 point I spotted a couple days ago.
Hey, I know your holding a tag, Muzzleloader season is in January...
tbogg10, I've caught a lot of fish out of Hoover.
Steve,
How'd ya do in PA?
Jeff,
I am eating that tag, along with a few others this year. I just don't have another hunting trip in the cards this year. My wife and Mom(our babysitter) have been great about the few trips i've taken already. Hope you connect with that 10 or something bigger. I believe Butch and Ken will be out for M.L.
I'll be hunting winter bow here all of January, though i expect to get out only once or twice a week.
PA was slow, weather was crazy, snow, rain, ice, wind. I could've shot several does but didn't have a doe tag. Never saw a buck. Crunchy (understatement)snow made the kind of hunting i wanted to do difficult. One of our guys shot a decent 6 point on friday, and a few does were taken on Sat., the last day. A buddy shot a 20" wide 8pt the Sat. before i got there, won our big-buck pool. Other than that our camp got a few basket racked bucks.
Good luck with the rest of your season and Merry Christmas to you and yours. Keep in touch.
There is great privit land hunting I own a field thats only 7 acres and its awsome hunting. Its just out of Woodville. Or Carey Ohio is loaded with deer there are good bucks but theyre not huge the upside is that they are loaded.
HOW ABOUT THEM BUCKEYE'S !
Now GO HOGS !
Sorry Go Cinnci !
RUN TEBOW SILLY !
BigO.
Welcome back. I'm happy to hear you had quality time with the family while in Ohio. We'll hook up next time. Your time was really limited this trip.
The Buckeyes did look good tonight. Hopefully Cincinnati can pull off a big upset.
I think the fine folks of Arkansas must have been living the clean life. Three missed FG's? Congrats to the Hogs.
Buckeyes- Winner
Hogs-Winner
LSU- LOOSER !
Florida- Tebow's STILL a WHINER !(lol)

Hey Steve,
Remember the 9pt we saw bedded near the road? I had him walk under me yesterday. I saw 3 nice bucks and 2 smaller bucks that day. He would be dead now except I have my sights on the big 10 point I spotted a couple days ago.
Hey, I know your holding a tag, Muzzleloader season is in January...
tbogg10, I've caught a lot of fish out of Hoover.
Steve,
How'd ya do in PA?
Congrats to the Hogs.
personally my favorite fishing lake is hoover reservoir in Westerville, it is a 10 horse limit lake so its nice and peaceful as for hunting i like the hocking hills region, wayne national forest, salt fork, there is a lot of farmland and deer are very populated i have found i very easy to get permission to hunt private farms because the deer tear up crops so bad, which also grows em big. i also like hunting in Coshocton and Muskingum counties, this year Ohio's muzzleloader season is actually moved back 2 weeks and is in mid january.
I found the hunting to be very good, although the standing corn was a problem in november. I'll be back.
Jeff,
I am eating that tag, along with a few others this year.
