Hunting

Greedy Still-Hunters:What would you do?

Uploaded on March 28, 2009

I don't normally still-hunt. I prefer dog drives, you are more likely to harvest deer. But I decided I wanted to do a little this past deer season. My uncle give me permission to hunt in his bean field, which butts up to a wealthy landowner. This individual owns hundreds of acres behind this little field. He tries stopping me one day going into the field, and I told him I had permission. I went on climbed up in my stand, covered in cedar limbs, and waited. My luck a big 145 lb. 8 pt. walked in 20 yards of my stand. I shot and killed him easily. Well this individual got jealous that I shot this deer and tried talking my uncle into running me off. That didn't work so he drove his hunting all terrain vehicle into the field, went to my corn pile, which the deer wasn't even interested in, stole my whole bag of corn, then poured what must have been a five gallon bucket of human urine in my buck scrape just beyond my corn pile. I am a female who really enjoys hunting. I only hunt with a shotgun, major handicap. I can't understand why still-hunters, or this one anyway, behave like this. What makes people act like this. Needless to say, it made me mad and I don't know whether I will ever still hunt again.

Talk to your uncle or landowner about this guy and see if they will talk to the idiot. Do not put up with his antics. For some stupid reason some hunters (jerks) think they own any deer in the area where they hunt. Please do not give up hunting because of this jerk, htere a lot of good hunters around that will even help you. By the way still-hunting is when you walk a little and wait and then walk some more. When in a stand it is stand hunting. Just minor details no biggy.

Sorry you had to deal with that, guys like that ruin it for everyone. 1st of all I would't worry about the urine, it all breaks down to ammonia after so many hours. It might even help? 2nd, don't quit hunting! If this happens again, notify your local D.N.R., that is hunter harrassment and they can ticket him. 3rd and finally, ask your uncle to talk to this guy. He makes all of us hunters look bad, and very very few off us act like this. So don't be discouraged and good luck hunting this year.

Does this jerk have permission from your Uncle to be on this Bean Field with his ATV's? If not, he's trespassing. Call the Game Warden. You might consider visiting him, your uncle in tow, and asking him politely to explain his actions. It would be especially effective if you do this in front of other people, even his wife, if he has one. Maybe you can shame him into better behavior. Good Luck

Not only it sounds like he was trespassing, but it also sounds like hunter harassment in which case comes with some hefty fines.

sounds like some of the greedy old bastards we have around here. People that have been left their land by a hard working relative, but have never worked the land themselves. In NE we have a hunter harassment law that is enforced. You and your uncle can tell this person that he will be turned into the state game commission for hunter harassment and trespassing and I'll bet he'll change his BS ways. Glad to see my family isn't the only one who have Females who enjoy to hunt. Hope you can enjoy your hunting and other outdoor activity's from now on.

Thanks for all the advice, No I don't think I will quit still-hunting but I will be a little more weary of this gentleman. I have asked my uncle to talk to him, I will just have to wait til Sept. 15 to find out whether it did any good or not. Thanks for the advice about the harrassment. I didn't think to call the game warden when the incident happened. I was just too upset. But I will be ready next deer season!!!

Here in Pa. we have tresspass by motor vehicle which includes ATV's. Under the law the guy who tore up your Uncle's field would be subject to a mandatory $500 fine and restitution. The second offense carries a mandatory $1,000 fine as well as loss of drivers license for six months.
I urge everyone to look into your state trespass laws, as you may be surprised at what you find.
Most state laws are accessable on the Internet.

Thanks Gadfly, I will look into our trespass laws. The only thing wrong with the fines is that is pocket change to this guy. He really believes that he is above the law, because he is a very well off oil guy. This is what makes what he did so bad. This guy can afford corn and lease thousands of acres if he wanted. Not to mention he owns thousands of acres already joining this property. I am just a female with no income(have to stay with my grandma 24-7) no land, and no money to just keep buying corn for him to steal! I think I will just wait for him this year and catch him in the act and turn it over to the game warden or law.

This has nothing to do with still hunters, it has everything to do with this guy being an A-hole.

In my experience, still hunters are some of the most impressive hunters. Still hunters have been around for millenia, climbing into trees is a new thing. Sitting in a tree and waiting on a deer is one thing, being able to track and sneak up on a deer is another.

I couldn't agree with you more. I am a dog hunter by heart and soul. I enjoy doing both, but I get more from dog hunting because it tests my ability to best predict what that deer is going to do just by studying the terrain and his habits. Plus, when I go still hunting as I did last year and the nice 8 pt I killed didn't fall right there, it helps to have my four legged friend to help me track it. Because as anyone knows who has hunted a deer does not always bleed out immediately and may not even drop but drop of blood for a quarter of mile or longer. Helps to have dogs that can track him.

Don't quit hunting...that is exactly what this jerk wants. I would file a report so that you have something in writing in case he does it again. The penalty for hunter harassment may be bigger than some people think.
