Hunting
To test to see if you need to change your batteries in your flashlight, turn it on and look into the light. If you can look at it for a while you need to change your batteries. if you look at it and it blinds you right away you do not need to change the batteries.

Sounds kind of stupid.
Probably the absolute best thing to do is to have a fresh set in the light before your trip or hunt, and a backup set of new ones (or freshly recharged ones if you are using rechargeables)too. Batteries are relatively light and take up little space in the grand scheme when you are packing.
I wouldn't say it was stupid, but it does sound like something I would tell someone in hunting camp to do just so I could watch them temporarily blind themselves while I get a good laugh out of it :-).
