Inherited a Remington 700 BDL Left Hand, but I am right handed

Uploaded on January 31, 2010

I recently inherited a Remington 700 BDL LH 30-06. It's beautiful gun with a scope. It was my wife's 80 year old grandfathers pride and joy, shooting Moose, Elk, Deer etc with it. I grew up hunting with a Marlin 30-30 and have shoot many different types of rifles, but I am a right handed person and I always place the butt of the rifle on my right shoulder. I am wondering if I will have an issue using this left handed rifle. I plan on going to the range and trying to get used to it and see how it goes.

I may find that it will just be kept for sentimental value and not used as a hunting rifle. So if I need to get another gun for hunting I need some recommendations. My dad still has his 30-30 Marlin up in NY where I grew up, but I will be hunting in the state of Georgia for deer and boar. I have asked a people that I know here in GA and the most common caliber is a .308 or any bolt action rifle that's what everyone is recommending. I loved using my dad's Marlin, but I everyone say to go bolt action. Also the stocks are not made like they used to be made. I went and looked at a Marlin in the store the other day and the stock looked fake.

Any recommendation on caliber and gun would be great in case I am uncomfortable using the left handed gun.

For a right-handed shooter, a left-handed bolt action rifle is actually a good choice for benchrest shooting. You can certainly operate the bolt with the left hand while the rifle is sitting on the forend rest and rabbit-ear rear bag, and convenient eject and collect the brass. As it sits, your .30-'06 is a sporter and not a competitive BR rifle, but you have the foundation of a great varminter if you choose a cartridge like the .257 Roberts, .257 Ackley Improved, 6.5x55mm or a similar medium capacity cartridge. If you rebarreled it with a heavy stainless barrel in .25-'06, you'd have a fine long-range varmint destroyer!

1) Don't sell that rifle
2) I have a friend that's left-handed and he works right-handed bolts by reaching over the scope with his strong hand. You can do the same in reverse.

I am left handed, but after 5+ yrs in military, i felt it awkward to work a left handed bolt....sold mine.....keep your rifle and buy a used 30/30 in a pawn shop. I hunted all over ga. Found the 308 shoots too fast....deer runs too far....you wil have best result with 30/30 and 30.06. Guarantee it.
