Deer Hunting

Marlin 336 35 Rem or 30-30 Win

Uploaded on December 19, 2011

I was wondering which caliber is overall better for whitetails.

Both these calibres are fine for deer at reasonable distances - say up to 200 yards. However, is the rifleman as good as the potential of these cartridges..?

30-30 ammo is available anywhere that sporting goods stores provide hunting supplies. The 35 Remington is not.

Make your choice..

Bwana is correct on availability, but the .35 is the superior round and the Marlin is a superior firearm.

yes i really like the rifle and just want to knowwhich to pick i know the 35 is a little more expensive and hard to find but it hits harder and the 30-30 is cheaper and easier to find. Can the 35 shoot as far as the 30-30?

I think both, unless you get into the new Hornady leverevolution fodder, are 100 to 120 yard rounds, maybe 150, tops.

Both fine for stomping the woods for whitetails. The .35 Rem is the better one though capable of shooting 200 grain bullets. It will bust through brush as well as anything you can find (short of a .375 H&H anyway). It is accurate out to about 150 yards but they both drop like a rock after that. Neither of these is good for longer ranges. However, if I see a whitetail bouncing through thick underbrush at 50 yards with sapplings between us,I want a .35 Rem in my hand.

I love the 30-30 for the woods where I hunt... it's not overly dense with brush or anything. DakotaMan is right; the .35 offers a much heavier bullet option, but I believe you'd want that for bear.

The 30-30 is plentiful, economical if you like to practice, and will do the job.

You have to understand the 35Rem came out after the 30-30, it filled a nitch that the 30-30 could not fill a 200Gr Bullet with greater Ft/lb at the same range 150Yd Max. at that time in history
the 30-30 first bullet was 160GrW/black power and smokeless,
the 35Rem has taken most North American Game, I would trust
the 35Rem over the 30-30, Now with Hornady's Flex Tip, I like the 35Rem even more!! Were I hunt(North Florida) 30/30&35Rem are in every Gas station,Food Store,Wal*Mart,Pawn shop.

I have shot with a 30-30 for yrs and they are great saddle guns, brush guns, knock around guns never had a problem and they stand up to everything.
