Deer Hunting

Peeing in your tree stand

Uploaded on February 26, 2010

After a long day in your tree stand is it right to pee out of your stand? My hunting buddy had to pee really bad with a doe right underneath him. He than peed right on the does back. Expecting her to run away it took a step backward and started licking the pee right off the leaves. Ive heard of many people taking a bottle out with them and peeing in the bottle but after that im not afraid to pee out of my stand.

Always thought the scent of human urine would drive off the game, maybe the times are changing.

wow, I cannot believe what I'm reading, deer licking human pee, peeing in the stand, or ground blind, YUK and what a farce!

the smell alone in a ground blind would cause me to vomit. I have a hard time believing a doe would lick human pee????? the phermones would make a smell like a predator, and the sound would make any animal move/jump/run.

Unlike you all, I urinate into a jug/closable bottle if by chance I need to go in a all day sit on the blind, or I have properly hydrated myself before hand and peeing is the last thing on my mind.
Wow, peeing, what a topic.

When I was young (teenager) I used to walk away from my blind to wiz. One day my Dad asked me what the heck I was doing? and I told him. He just shook his head and said just go out of your blind, he did and he was one of the most successfull hunters I knew. He also smoked in the blind. Hunt using the wind, and it don't matter if you wear Oldspice, and eat Bar-B-Q in the stand.

I refuse to let anyone do these things in our woods. It may make a difference and it may not but my opinion is never chance it. It only takes one mess up for a mature animal to never visit that area again and it's not worth losing that chance.

littleshagshag, I understand your point, but you are going a bit extreme in your tactic.

If there is an area that has food, cover, and water, a deer will not move out of the area because it smelled some human urine. Imagine how many times just in a month that a deer gets spooked just from coyotes, and bears. They won't leave an area just because something jumped them.

If that was the case, deer would just be nomads traveling across the U.S. trying to find the pearly white gates of Whitetail Utopia where the acorns never stop dropping, and there are no predators allowed in.

Well after doing a little research what I have found is that urine is different in different species, due to the chemicals found in what they eat. Animals that eat meat, like predators and humans, have a lot more protein in their urine, than those animals that are vegetarian, like whitetails. It has been found that a deer's sense of smell is about 1000 times better than that of a human. With that said you must know that urine breaks down within hours into ammonia and other substances, due to bacterial action and being exposed to air. And deer can only tell the difference between the urine of something that has recently eaten meat, and something that has not eaten meat.

I have read several articles from outdoor writers in national magazines who feel that peeing out of your stand will not adversly affect your hunting. Personally, I have done it several times only to have a deer come by a few minutes later to be harvested. Deer are used to smelling urine from a variety of animals. We are considered one of those animals.
