Sixth sense?

Uploaded on November 23, 2009

Every year people I talk to say that deer have a sixth sense. When they can't possibly smell you, you sit as still as stone, and don't even dare to breath to keep any noise in. And yet that deer will look up at you as if you were a sore thumb. I have had many similar encounters with deer, But I have also had deer walk right up to me and be completely oblivious to me. What are your opinions on this ''sixth sense'' that deer tend to have.

Older deer are probably more aware of their surroundings, such as a dark blob hanging on the side of the tree that was not there the day before. I have cut a large limb down to clear a shooting lane and had a deer walk up, look where the limb was, and bolt the other way. Big deer don't get that way by ignoring small signs... I don't agree with the sixth sense, just very strong five senses. Deer are much smarter than many hunters give them credit for.

I'm with deltabuck on this one - to the extent that deer have a sixth sense it is the intelligence to take full advantage of its other five senses

If someone placed a large object in your living room, you would notice. They know every last detail of their territory. Also, you would be more "tuned in" if you lived your whole life in the woods with your butt on the line every day.

Most if not all of their senses are more acute than ours, making it seem as they have a sixth sense. They are less complacent than we are and have a greater survival instinct, that's all.

its not the sixth sense it just you. the figuer you out do to you not picking your spots right. the deer know if a stick was moved it like being in there house they now whats right and whats wrong. Its kinda like when you see a hunter in all ornge pants, jacket hat and gloves. the deer see you mybe not in ornge but they notice the giant gray blob sitting there on the ground or up in a tree it dont matter.
