Deer Hunting
OK, I went out hunting today at about 2pm. It started getting dark at about 4:30pm, but the full moon came right out, bright as could be. Since I was in my backyard, I figured that I would hang out for awhile. At about 5:30pm I started hearing what sounded like some idiot walking through my property. As any hunter can tell you, humans have a very distinct walk, not really like any animal out in the woods. "Crunch Crunch" "Crunch Crunch" "Crunch Crunch" Very distinct, loud, cracking little branches under the feet, and walking without a care in the World.
Since I have my property posted really well, and since it was dark and late, I was a bit pissed off that someone was walking right behind my house at this time of night. The walking was about 30 feet behind me, in the tree line, since my stand is at the edge of the tree line, with my back to the tree line, and about 30 feet up in the air. Pines block anything from seeing me until it is out of the tree line.
So, I am sitting there pissed off and the walking gets closer, and closer, and closer. No real pauses in the walking, just walking like the guy has no care in the World. I look down and see a head pop out of the woods, with a long neck and a body. IT WAS A FRICKEN DEER!!! I was completely not ready to take a shot with my bow. Now, I have NEVER in my life heard that much noise made by a deer. It was like it did not care if I new it was there at all. Very weird.
Anyone else ever experience something like this?
Thanks
I have heard and seen deer walking like this through the woods....especially bucks. Actually this evening I was walking out of the woods through a pasture and I saw a deer walking through the pasture a couple hundred yards from me. I was in the open and quickly walked behind a solitary pine in the pasture. I scoped the deer as he started walking towards me. He walked right past me (within a couple dozen yards) and never even slowed down. He was a young 6 so I let him pass, but I couldn't believe that he didn't smell me, hear me or see me. He seemed like he was in a hurry to get somewhere......probably to the area where the does usually bed on our property.
It's that sixth sense some deer have, they just know when it's time to walk thru with no worries. I have had deer walk by me as you stated. One morning I kept hearing this hunter on a ridge above me blowing his grunt call over and over. I was thinking this guy must be new to hunting, no deer will respond to that type of grunting. Then the grunting started moving closer and a doe appeared, wow does grunt like that I thought. shortly afterword a very nice ten point followed the doe straigt to my tree. The grrunting I'd heard was the buck chasing the doe, he was making a brraaa with every step and his nose to the ground. I passed on that enormous buck that day (probably the largest buck I've ever seen) I dont give big bucks walking rights, but I did that one. He walked right to my tree, smelled the 1st screw in step then turned inside out and ran 5-10 yrds, relaxed then continued after the doe. The things you see when bucks are allowed to walk.
Would've shoot him Cgull. I grunt like that sometimes and often bring bucks in, after witnessing bucks do that in the woods.
This was a first for me in all my years of hunting. Weird. Now I know. I welcome other comments and stories. It is helpful to read about the other experiences.
Yes I know now I should of shot the buck. My thoughts were that if I let him walk, maybe I could put my son on the deer that evening and he might get a shot at trophy. I did put my son on stand that evening and the next morning, we never saw that buck again. It was a good feeling allowing such a magestic buck walk, I know the deer Gods smiled upon me that day, for now I see more bucks than most hunters I know. Let some bucks walk and the deer Gods will smile upon you.
there was one time during muzzleloading season, that the greasy deer camp food got to my stomach and i decided that i needed to do some work. i found a suitable tree that was overhanging the creek so i wouldnt ruine my stand... in mid duece, a small four point came tumbling down the hill on the other side of the creek. i dont know if he slipped or what, but i looked at him and laughed and he looked at me and laughed and we went on our way.
Yeah, Especially with squirrels. I'll be deer hunting and squirrels are just everywhere making as much noise as those tiny rodents can possibly make, and the one time I don't look to check out some crunching leaves It turns out to be a deer.
earlier this year while bow hunting I heard what I thought was the wind picking up, a whole lot of noise in the leaves. I looked it the direction of the noise an saw five does being follow by a really nice buck! They were only twenty yards away. I droped to my knee and got ready to fire but there was just too many small limbs it the way, so I had to just watch as they all walked away never even pausing one time.
i personally think deer walk louder at night cause they feel safer and dont have to really hide
Well, it came out again tonight. Right around the same time too. It has to be a buck. I put down a mock scrap with some active acrap about 5 inches in the dirt on some wax paper and then with dirt over it. I brushed the leaves away with a branch like a buck would (sorta like a V shape). He stoppped to sniff the spot and then walked on. It has been fun watching him. Tomorrow night I will harvest him.
You never can really truly tell what animal is making what sound behind you,I had a hoard of squirrels run back and forth all evening and when I heard the rustling of leaves behind me, I thought nothing of it and proceded to take a step out of my stand, I looked down and the slight rustling was a BEAR!!I stepped back into the tree and waited a while.
i've heard/seen deer walk like this during the rut. They sometimes walk like they are on a mission to get somewhere.
Yes, I have had similar experiences. When they walk like that - and it is not generally very often - they really catch you off guard. It's frustrating; however, that is the way it is. Better luck next time!
