Survival Tool and Fire Starter

Two things I always keep handy are:
1) a Bicycle inner tube:
This can be cut long or short to accomodate slings, rubber bands, tourniquet for snake bites etc. and also can be burned when you need a signal smoke fire. It will even burn wet!

2) A 9 volt battery and steel wool:
Even when wet the steel wool will ignite a strong enough spark to ignite kindling or tinder. Just connect the positive and negative leads on the battery to create the arc. I have found the thicker the wool the stronger the spark.

Instead of a battery why not carry water proof matches or a lighter in some water proof bag for fire starting. Inner tube very good idea though.
