Hunting

What did you want at 19?

Uploaded on May 05, 2009

I need help. My daughter has just completed your first year of college and her first year of living alone and I'm so damn proud of her. I want to buy her something nice with an outdoors theme. She likes to hunt and fish equally but owns nothing of the sort. She borrows everything from me when she goes. She lives in Northern GA. (yep, a Bulldog) What should I buy her? Camo clothes? Gun? Fly-rod?

I would go with a gun. it could be something you give her and last her the rest of her life and then she could pass it on to her daughter.

I agree about the gun. Just get her that is easy to operate and a quality scope to go with it. Let her know that she can go hunting with you whenever she has time. Ladies who hunt are great people.

Yall are lucky there are still a few of us ladies lurking around here. I agree with the gun - she probably can't afford one and it will really mean something to her. She will be able to keep it for a lifetime and pass it to her kids. You can help her learn how to care for it and shoot with it. Plus, you will have a hunting buddy that will have her own gun, always a good thing!

GO WITH THE GUN!

A fly rod is also a very nice thing to have in Northern GA.

Sorry for the mixed message.

Being a rifle hunter my whole life I would agree with a gun, but having my first bow put in my hands just 5 years ago....I scream "get her a bow".
Honestly, I never knew up close, in your face hunting until I started bow hunting. It is now an obsession rather than a passion.
Becoming one with your surrounding, experiencing the sounds and smells of nature from a tree stand is the most awesome experience. When she experiences her first deer at 20 yards and thinks that he can hear her heart pounding, trust me she will thank you over and over for her bow.
Good luck and be sure to let us know your decision. Then we want to see pictures of her first harvest.

Go with the gun. (A pistol and a concealed carry permit too) So that she can have it on her anywhere.

I would agree with the gun. I am a female that comes from a nonhunting family. My great uncle bought me my gun. It is my most treasured possession. It will be something she can always keep and never borrow yours. If she really likes the outdoors I would also go with a subscription to the F&S magazine. I love mine. It gives the whole year!!! I agree also with the bow. I would love the opportunity to bow hunt. She just graduated from college she needs the challenge. It takes real patience and careful precision to tackle a bow, so I have heard!!

I'd go with a .243 rifle and a good scope, along with a Boonie Packer sling. It will last her a lifetime and every time she picks it up, she'll be thinkin' 'bout dear 'ol dad!

Just as Judy said, my second choice would be a bow,and the way Judy described huntin' with a bow, causes me to long for the fall bow season ...

I would go with a rifle (or shotgun) as my first choice, followed closely by a bow.

Dear Desperate Father, Today is my first day and have grown up around guns my whole life. I would say buy her a gun or if you have a big sports store close you could get her a gift card. So that she can pick out one that is more comfortable for her. You could always put a picture in with the gift card in the bday card. Anyone can buy camos at any time. Fly rods I have no idea what the prices are of those. My point is the gun is the most expensive in (I think) and not easy for a 19 year old to obtain. I wish my father had given me a gun as a present. As I have never bought myself one and I am 38 now. My husband has many and I can use them when I want. But I want one of my own and after my kids are grown I will buy one.

It depends on your daughter? Does she use your guns? and would she use them on her own? If so great go with a gun my first gun was a 22 with unique design on the stock it will always be special to me. If not then having it as a keepsake would be great but you might consider a fishing rod. It depends if you want to get her something to have or to use?
Starting out I was more likely to pick up a rod and go at it on my own rather than a gun.
Also cool gifts would be a rod making class gift certificate.
A hunters education class gift certificate.
Either way you're a great dad for thinking about her!

I would go with a gun and if there was a way to customize it, I would go with that too. I am 21 at KU and I am obsessed with hunting and anything that has a KU or ADPI logo. So I have camo shirts that I got stitched with those logos or on my gun case I got a logo too.

Your a Dad, get creative. :)

I know this is an old thread and you've probably long since made up your mind, but I couldn't resist chiming in anyway. If you want to mark a momentous occasion, buy her a gun. Preferably (in my opinion) a lovely wood-stocked shotgun that she can take care of and shoot for the rest of her life and pass down to her children and tell them "your grandpa bought this for me when I was a girl."

Or, save the gun for a REALLY big occasion like graduation, and this year get her a membership at a sporting clays club, a pretty concealed-carry purse (although I haven't found one yet that doesn't look like one my grandma would carry), a fishing rod, a good pair of boots, etc.

I do agree with the gun idea. It can be more special and "personalized" than other things because there are so many kinds out there. I would casually ask what her favorite animal to hunt is, then get her the proper gun for that.

I say go with a bow, a bow is more for that specific person, plus a 19 year old will grow to be more patient and appreciate the time in the bow wood and encounters that she will have with the deer up close and personal.

diamonds are forever, why not a bow? haha, a gun might be more useful though, especialy a shotgun combo, with bird barrel and a rifled barrel, not to tell you how to spend your money on your daughter. whatever you do, i'm sure she will apriciate it.
