Deer Hunting

What would you do?

Uploaded on February 07, 2009

What would you do if you saw a dog walking on a deer trail that you set your stand out on and it didnt turn when you wissled at it or say hay to. I was about to shoot it but i didnt now if it was one of the neighbors dogs. It was a husky looking like dog.

I would never shoot a dog without reason and huskys are larger than coyotes so there shouldn't be any confussion. If the dog is chasing livestock it is just cause if it is your livestock or the land owner has given you permission.

I agree with herb I would be pissed if someone shot my dog just because it was walking in the woods. Unless he attacked me then of course it would be game on!

I wouldn't shoot it, that could leave somebody heart broken, if the dog habitually visits the location then I would seek alternative methods, but not the first time I see the dog.

I wouldn't shoot it because dogs are valuable tools for hunting and the people who own it could use it for hunting.

Dogs and deer will use the same paths. There have been times that a dog will walk by me smelling deer and later the deer will come by smelling the dogs trail. Typically I keep quiet because of 2 reasons. One- You dont know if that is a normal routine. Two- Yelling hey or whistling to it can make you a new hunting buddy that likes to bark.

I would never shoot a dog. Don't blame the dog for dog/deer problems, blame the owner!

I've seen feral dogs in deer country, and I've seen domestic pets that the owners (for some unknown reason) brought afield during deer season. I'd look for a collar, or grooming, or some indication of care. I definitely wouldn't shoot at a dog I recognize as belonging to a neighbor. If it's unfamiliar and running game, cattle or other livestock, I'd consider a shot but I wouldn't risk killing a household pet. I've been asked to eliminate feral dog packs, and I've done so, but these were unkempt critters exhibiting pack behavior and they were running dairy cattle.

You can't shoot the dog because of the owner's ignorance.

Don't shoot the dog. It belongs to someone. Who knows, he may chase a deer to you.

Hell, I hunt on 2,000 acres, and we've had a problem with feral dogs in the past. I saw the neighbor's dogs out one morning surrounding a cow and her calf, jumping up and nipping. Ran 'em off. Next morning, came back loaded for bear. Dogs were growling and menacing cattle. Dogs all got blasted. We enforce leash laws. Neighbor didn't complain. Dogs were savage and poorly mannered.

I normaly wouldn't shoot it, I would be ticked if someone shot my dog. There are a lot of wild dogs out where we hunt. They treed one of my buddies a couple of years ago after he shot a doe and took it. In that case I might have to shoot them. I also had two come in and shred my decoys during turkey season and let them go.

I wouldnt shoot it. I had this problem up at my uncles farm. The only difference is it was my uncles dog. He would end up somehow following me to my stand. I would usually end up throwing my soda bottle or something that i could afford not to have in the stand with me until i got down. He would take the hint when the bottle nearly hits him and wander on back to the house.

In New York it is illegal to shoot a dog chasing deer. So I would never even think of shooting a dog. Next thing you know the DEC would be there giving you a ticket.

Don't shoot. Normally deer scent and follow just for curiosity. Besides I have seen just normal sooners track and run deer and a deer will always come back. You are much more likely to kill a deer, a big deer in front of a dog than sitting up a stand watching bait. Besides you try running the deer off you may just make enough noise to run your deer off as well. I would only shoot if I felt threatened.

I love most breeds of dogs; however, I hate seeing dogs running in the wild when I am in the deer hunting woods. It is illegal to shoot dogs in our state. Would I shoot one while on stand? That's a good question. Hopefully I will not have to find out.
