I think this is a decision that should be made by the area a person is hunting in. In wide open country a spotting scope is necessary. In more forested areas like I hunt in north western wisconsin a good pair of binocs is more than enough. I use a good pair of 10x42's and they serve my needs. If I was to go out west I would invest in a good spotting scope.
It is great to have both, but in most situations it best just to have the binoculars they are just more versatile. However, the spotting scope works great the long range scouting.
