Who would like to see "(firearm manufacturer)" run an advertising contest?

Uploaded on January 10, 2012

Another thread got me thinking about this.

If a firearms manufacturer opened a contest open to the general public for the chance to win a new firearm how many of you would enter for a chance to win?

It would be an advertising contest where entrants compiled and designed an ad that would be published by the manufacture. And that for their original work, they would receive a new firearm from said manufacturer. Also being that it was awarded on a monthly basis, or only one winner per month.(where previous entries would carry over to new months if not chosen during the entry period)

What I'm curious to know, is...

1. Would that interest you?

2. If you could enter an unlimited amount of entries, how many times would you enter? (per month or year)

3. Are there any changes or ideas that you would like to see in such a contest? (i.e. prize awarded every two weeks instead of monthly, but the prizes had less retail value) or maybe gift certificates good towards the purchase of a new firearm from that manufacturer?

Any feedback about this would be appreciated! Thanks

1. nope
2. zero
3. not interested, see 1. & 2.

I'm not a commercial artist. Having been married to a comercial artist I know that they can easily defeat a novice when it comes to ad design. Entering such a contest would be a waste of time for most people.

If they have to give them away, something is wrong?

Remington had a contest going last year. You would submit a photo with your "Remington Moment" and you could vote once a day for a picture/story. Every week or every two weeks they would have a winner, and at the end of the year they would choose a winner out of the previous winners to win a grand prize with a safe, 25ish guns, and a case of ammo for each. I participated for the first month and then off and on throughout the year. I just got tired of losing by an unknown margin. You couldn't tell if just me and and a couple of buddies voting for my picture were even close to winning. I would vote every day of the week when I entered.
I've also entered a contest or two on Facebook for Colt and another one from Remington, where I won a hat.

I would enter one where there is a one chance per entry kind of thing. The only way I would enter a voting one is if you could see how many votes all the pictures get.

I'm always up for a chance at free guns, however slim that chance may be. I'd give it a look.

I do a couple of trivia type gun drawings on the web occasionally. So...

1. The creative side in me might attempt something for this if I felt inspired. Thing is, it could turn into a lot of work... for nothing but donating ad campaign ideas.

2. I'd probably enter 1 or 2 because this sort of contest would take some work. Also, I'd want to see entries limited in some fashion because it just dilutes the quality of the work you'd receive (and reduces my chances at winning).

3. Once a month would probably work for this sort of thing. hate to wait a year to see if I won something.

As pbshooter says, I'd want complete transparency and to be able to see vote tallies.

Pig Hunter and others who have said it would require more effort than they felt was worth their time.

What if.... Say you really didn't need a very creative design, such as they had images that you could download and modify. Add a couple of sentences for a pre-chosen ad type thing? Similar to write the best caption contests here at F&S, except it would be, write the best ad. Of course you would have to select the right picture for your ad, so that they would be compatible. But it would make things easier to an extent.

WA MtnHunter, nothing wrong, just a way to get people more involved and to branch out into the national public. Granted commercial artists are very talented, however there is only so much a single person can come up with. Basically it broadens the amount of design ideas.

Also the general consensus seems to be that you would prefer a public vote on the ads? Instead of a Board of Directors choosing what they thought were the best ads? Both have their positive and negative attributes. With a public vote certain people with lots of "friends" could win even though what they produced wasn't very good, while with a Board of Directors voting you would have no idea what they were looking for in an ad.(really about the same as the public too)

Also interest was expressed in limiting entries to a monthly thing instead of waiting for a year to find out if you won. (i.e. no entries are carried forward) What if there was a runner up type of prize? Maybe a certificate good towards the purchase of a firearm from the company, that would buy a lower retail priced item but you would have to spend some money from your pocket to get a higher valued item. Maybe something around $200.00 good towards the purchase of any of their products?

Thanks for all the feedback! It really is appreciated.

It's interesting to offer a way to quickly pick and choose design options, but then you really wouldn't be coming across any potential "new," unthought of, ideas.

You could show public vote tallies and a Board of Directors vote tally separate, and possible weight them differently. The "public" vote has the power in numbers, while the BOD would have more weight.

To clarify I was thinking it would be an option for those who might not have the ability to create something similar, or it could give those who were interested an idea of what type of thing could or would be acceptable. I think it would still be a good idea to collect new work that a person compiled. Which is a big part of the reason to run a contest of this type.

I like the idea of a public vote and a BOD both being involved. This also gives the BOD the opportunity to see what the public is liking.(which might sway their opinions on the matter)

Thanks for the feedback
