Survival
I notice that on the TV shows like Dual Survival and Man Woman Wild they are wisely never without their knives, and the Hawkes in Man Woman Wild wisely carry a canteen with some water and a canteen cup as a means to sanitize more. However, in order to demonstrate survival skills none of them ever seem to carry a means to make fire. How do you handle the most basic needs of knife, fire and water?
Personally I don't leave the house without two knives, a folder in my pocket and a sheath knife on my belt. When I pull on my pants in the morning there is a zippo lighter and a match safe full of matches and tinder in them. When I take to the trail I carry at least one stainless steel water bottle. In a pinch, I can boil more water in the steel bottle. However, because I like to stop mid day for a cup of tea, the ultra light Primus kettle in my daypack does a better job of boiling water for both tea and sanitizing more water to refill my bottle.
You've always got some good tips sourdough!
In the field I usually have both a folding and a fixed blade knife. In my emergency kit are water purifying tablets, tinder, and three ways to make fire: lighter, waterproof matches, and ferro rod. The emergency kit is contained in a one-liter sealable plastic food container so the contents could be moved to pockets and the container be used to carry water. Like Dave, I carry at least one stainless steel water bottle. Most of the time I also carry a water filter in my pack.
This hunting season I'm considering carrying the Cold Steel Mini-Tac Skinner as a neck knife and hanging a small ferro rod from the same chain. This would be worn under clothing. Some of my hunting travel is via canoe so I'm also considering sewing a pouch on the back of my life vest to containg basic survival items in case of an unplanned swimming event. I always have a dry-bag with clothes in the canoe during winter but want to plan on the possibility the bag is unretrievable after a capsize.
On the various TV shows, it makes for better infotainment to show the star of the show using a bow drill or flint than to show him whipping out a lighter.
I alway have a lighter, some matches, and a magnifying glass when I head out. Also a couple knives, a steel water bottle, and a bandana. Even then, it is kind of overkill, as woodland survival in western Pennsylvania is basically staying put til the volunteer firemen and state cops find you.
Well anytime I leave the city limits I always have at least one of several survival kits I own. ! is a bare min. knife, flint, purifi straw and compass, The other 2 I may carry have everything I would need to sustain life indefinatly. As far as fire goes I can and do use various methods to build fires but unless I am brushing up on my skills I use a lighter. 2 of the 3 kits I may e carring have stainless steel mess tins so if I run out of water tabs I can boil. As far as knife is concerned 1 of them is a knife kit the other 2 I always carry 2 knives with.

I dont know if i just live so close to the city or what but i dont always have a knife. I carry a couple while hunting or backpacking or camping but for just going to the store i dont carry a knife
I always have at least one knife on me, even in the office. Today it's a Spyderco Centofante in one pocket and a Cold Steel Mini-Pal in the other. In my pack underneath the desk is a Sogzilla folder by SOG.
I wouldnt be caught without a knife. In the woods its knives and my military days tells me canteen and canteen cup always. water is most important. there are all kinds of scenarios of the woods do your homework first pack what you need for that area. I wouldnt bring my l.l. bean goose down winter parka out in texas in Aug. And I wouldnt wear shorts in jan in Minnesota. Common sense is the most important thing i carry
