FEBRUARYS "THE ULTIMATE SURVIVOR" FEEDBACK

Uploaded on February 08, 2010

AS A LONG TIME READER OF FIELD AND STREAM AND A YEAR ROUND SOLO WANDERER OF THE BACKWOODS OF NORTHWEST MONTANA, I THOUGHT YOUR "ULTIMATE SURVIVOR STORY" TO BE ONE OF YOUR BEST. I DID TAKE EXCEPTION THOUGH TO # 10 TIP OF "IMPORTANT SKILLS TO KNOW". A SWEATY TEE SHIRT AND FROZEN DUCT TAPE IS NO MATCH FOR A ROLL OF HORSE WRAP. A 4" X 15' ROLL WEIGHS ALMOST NOTHING, IS STERILE AND STRETCHES TO PULL WOUNDS CLOSED. IT STICKS LIKE VELCRO TO ITSELF AND CAN ALSO BE SPLIT AND TIED. ALONG WITH MY TRUSTY BEAGLE AND 454, IT IS ALWAYS WITH ME IN THE WOODS.

I have never thought off the other uses for coban..One thing is for sure, my aid bad was never with out it while deployed. That stuff when combined with gauze or other dressing type material can sure stop a bleed. Thanks I'll play around with the other uses..I keep it in my first aid kit in my pack anyway might as well have more than one use for it

Great idea on the horse wrap. One time I was hiking with my dog and she stepped on a piece of broken glass in a back woods campground. The glass split her pad. If I would have had some horse wrap I could have wrapped her paw right then and there.

I loved his description of the raven's shadow unleashing a jolt of pure terror and the raven's post-it note; to check back in the morning to see if he had become carrion yet. My mind works like this too in the wilds, but I don't have the gift of being able to put these ideas into words like Mr. Heavy does. Thank you so much for the great article. It is a masterpiece.

great article... and koban is awesome... i also carry some combat gauze of the quickclot variety, and from time to time a torniquet. my kit is rather extensive in the medical care section as i am much like hengst i am a medic who has been deployed. if it just me in the woods, i pack enough gauze and wrap to manage small wonds, but if anyone or anything goes with me other than that, i pack enough for small surgical proceedures... sutures and the like. you never know what can go wrong when there are more people than you have supplies for.
