Rescue and Recovery

Uploaded on December 23, 2009

If lost, use your digital camera in video mode to record what has happened, where you are, and where you and your friends(if any)are going. Should rescuers find your camera, either on your person or elsewhere, they will know exactly what happened to you and your friends and where to direct their rescue and recovery efforts. pczupryk@verizon.net

There are 3 problems with this. First, it assumes that everyone who enters the woods brings a camera. Second, it violates the first rule of being lost...STAY PUT! Third, if someone happens to bring a camera, and a move is absolutely necessary, recording your events on an electrical device that can malfunction isn't exactly a good idea. You're better off carving a note and direction of travel into a tree, or using sticks and stones to make a note and directional arrow, and mark your trail as you go along. As for the camera...you can destroy it and salvage the lens for starting fires on sunny days, any wire for tying stuff together, and any shiny parts to use as a signalling device. The other "junk" pieces can be used to leave a "bread crumb" trail in the direction of travel.

Of all the emergency gear I've ever carried, a camera was never considered. As I prioritized my most basic necessities for survival the camera didn't make the list.
