Survival
A sense of direction like common sense does not always manifest itself in all people. Unlike a sixth sense, a sense of direction is just subconsciously taking stock of the lay of the land, the position of the sun, landmarks and turns made. Until such observations become second nature and are done subconsciously the wilderness traveler will need to make the effort to continually consciously make these observations. When leaving camp or your vehicle look ahead in the direction you are heading and identify a readily seen landmark. Then after a few paces in that direction look behind you to identify a landmark for the return trip. As you move about take note of the position of the sun. It rises in the east, arcs across the southern sky and sets in the west. Check your observations against your compass until you become so confident the compass stays in your pack.
I honestly believe that technology abuse has given rise to a generation of humans that are just plain dumb when it comes to anything relating to nature. There are a few elite individuals out there that still have the skills to be completely self sufficient. It really makes me wonder how quickly society would crumble in the event of a crisis...I imagine there would be a pretty quick change in leadership. Money and political power doesn't buy intelligence or common sense, which is something today's leadership seems to lack. However, someone who is completely self sufficient has a good bit of both.
I always have a good sense of direction, I have shown friends shortcuts through forests I've never been in, I just know how to get somewhere.....I just know, to me compasses are one of the most useless and overrated pieces of equipment ever created. but that is just me, i've got friends who would be lost before they went 50 yards from home.
I agree bioguy. Mankind has become to reliant on technology. If all the gps' and cell phones went out, people would panic and everything would fall apart. The few outdoorsmen left would be the only ones who would be able to take care of themselves and their families. People always tell me that the jerimiah johnson way of life is outdated and learning how to be self sufficient is a waste of time. I kinda want the situation we're talking about to happen, just so I can say I told you so.
