Survival
A couple of weeks ago I took my nephew on a 7 mile hike followed by a couple of miles of bolder hopping to fish a high mountain trout stream. He was carrying a quart of water and I had half again as much. It was a hot, dry, high altitude day and we burned through that water supply quickly. How much water, if any, do you carry and what, if any, is your preferred means of purifying more?
normially have 2 bottles (approximately 16.9oz each) in my hunting pack, mostlikely one more in the truck for when I get back. that being said I dont exactly have to go hikeing to hunt. If that were the case I have a 2qt military canteen and a one quart depending on the heat I would carry both. Im alittle over kill on the importance of drinking water... just ask my wife....
Dave, last weekend my friend and I went pig hunting in 90+ DegF temps with high humidity. I carried a 32-oz bottle and a 20-oz bottle of water. He wore a CamelBak with 3-liters of water. We went through most of our water. In cooler temps I will carry only one 32-oz bottle while hunting. Earlier this year my wife and I day-hiked in the Smoky Mountains: again I had 52-oz of water and she carried 32-oz. It was hot and we still had to filter some water at the half-way point.
These days I always pack a Katadyn Vario water filter, prefering it over chemical water treatment because of taste and that water is immediately available to drink with no waiting for the chemicals to work. I've got a buddy that swears by the UV pen type of water purification. I also pack purification tablets as back-up.
I will cary either one or two 100oz camel back bladders in my pack, depending on conditions. I drink alot more water than the average person. I ashamadley do not carry a purification system when I am out. I would like to invest in a purifier soon though. So many pieces of gear to get and so little cash.
Well I recently ran across a new portable water purification system that is the best thing I've seen come along in a long time. here is an article on it. Check it out its really worth the read. http://www.squidoo.com/Purificup
My wife and I carry both a 100 oz Camelback. If I anticipate going through all of that, I have a Katahdyn Hiker filter that I bring with. I also always carry Potable Aqua iodine tabs, just in case.
I use the UV stick. It works really well if you drink a lot of water and frequently cross good, clear water but want to be sure it's pure. If you plan to use it, make sure your water bottle isn't real narrow-mouthed.
