Clint Eastwood’s Chrysler Ad Draws Divided Political Response

Uploaded on February 07, 2012

Clint Eastwood’s Chrysler ad draws divided political response, February 6, 2012– Steve Goldstein

“Halftime in America” could be interpreted as a rallying call for a second term for President Barack Obama, who pushed ahead with a bailout of Chrysler and General Motors despite objections from Republicans, including his likely presidential opponent, Mitt Romney.

“Saving the America Auto Industry: Something Eminem and Clint Eastwood can agree on,” tweeted Dan Pfeiffer, the White House spokesman. Added David Axelrod, Obama’s chief strategist: “Powerful spot.” Filmmaker Michael Moore was a bit more direct (and apologies for the Twitterese): “Your sermon seemed 2 b a call 2 give O his ‘second half.’”

The former Republican mayor of Carmel, Calif. wasn’t universally loved. “WTH? Did I just see Clint Eastwood fronting an auto bailout ad???” said Michelle Malkin, the conservative blogger. “I think Clint Eastwood’s credentials as a conservative have been overrated for some time,” added David Limbaugh, the brother of Rush and himself a conservative author.

I had a negative reaction when I watched this 2 minute ad on Sunday. What are your thoughts? ~ PigHunter

I thought it was great, some have compared the snarl to the one on the "get off my lawn" one on Gran Torino. http://youtu.be/NelBNtNm8l0 Let's not forget GW Bush bailed just gave Chrysler 4 billion two weeks before Obama took office, what Obama did was fire the CEOs and insist on restructuring. Saved a million jobs and now we have a very successful car company.

Why is it Karl Rove and the Republicans hate anything that is pro America? Do they even stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance?

All of this hype by liberals that our auto industry is recovering because of the good economic policy by Obama, and the compassion shown by Obama for the auto workers is BS. Ford wouldn't take the bait, they knew the grip Obama would have on their company via the regulations involved with taking the money. This is nothing more than fascist/socialism. Ford has done the best in hindsight of all the Autos. But the truth of the matter is, were it not for sales to China, GM, especially would be in deeeeep-doo-doo. The green energy, expensive autos have sold very poorly, and now have proven to be very dangerous as well. Domestic sales are not that strong, and with the price of gas about to skyrocket along with all consumer products as a result of Obama policy, and the need to print up a lot of dollars to paydown the massive debt created by bad policy, our economy is going back in the tank, not continuing to recover.

I think some of you are thinking too much into it. I took it as "we've been in hard times for a while, but we will emerge stronger and better."

Just like any old sappy sports movie, they're down at half time, coach gives inspirational speech, then they win the big

And here is a perfect example of what troubles some in the GOP camp.
What is it about the GOP mind set that sees a hidden motive behind everything?
Govt. death panels, Birther, Secret Muslim, and on and on and on.
Honestly, sometimes you guys seem fixated on conspiracy theories...and that makes it difficult to have serious debate.
It is a freakin car commercial! Remember the Chrysler commercials featuring 50 cent? Or the one featuring Dr. Dre?
It's about a comeback, not about which politician did this or that.
But NOooo, now we're going to apply personal "interpretation" to everything someone perceives?

It was a good commercial, but I disagree with Clint. We are down by a score in the 4th quarter and the two minute warning is about sound.

The ad was naive and full of political correct imagery. That's what I find offensive. It makes no difference to me how many Clint Eastwood movies I like. There's no way in this universe that the oposing political factions will put aside differences. At best, the ad was a waste of time. At worst, it was a poorly disguised attempt by Chrysler to lick the political hand that fed it.

I think more like down by a TD and FG already inside the 2-minute warning. Let's find a way to penalize the coaches for illegal procedure, too many on the field, and delay of game. Penalty = Congressional Pensions!

Pig to fix the mess we have to put aside differences and work together. That's pretty obvious to anyone who has watched the record number of filibusters of late.

Now this is more like it...honest discussion.
I agree that it looks bleak in our legislative chambers. Way too big egos reside their nowadays. That's why I think there needs to be some serious changes made.
First, dump em all, if they're an incumbent they're part of the problem.
Second, fixed term limits, no more career politicians. And this should include the elimination of lifetime pensions.
Third, a streamlined recall process.
Fourth, scale back the use of the filibuster in the Senate. It used to be, if a Senator felt strongly enough to actually filibuster, he/she had to stand and speak non stop, nowadays a simple threat of a filibuster, a kind of drive by filibuster suffices... I would like to see them actually doing it. I want the whole country to see the face of the person who singlehandedly stops the country, night after night if need be.

Feel free to add suggestions.

Ol' Squint is an actor, nothing more nothing less, I suspect that in his advanced year's he has grown soft in the head. But being a media whore he will say what he is paid to say, nothing more or less.

Moishie, he probably has enough money to only take jobs he likes. A lot of celebrities lend their faces to causes they support.

He donated the money to charity before the ad even ran.

Let's not forget Clint Eastwood self identified as a McCain voter and has stated before that he usually votes Repub.

Maybe he's just happy that Detroit seems to have dodged the bullet? Monday morning quarterbacking the bailout was a great thing to do, saved a ton of jobs and a large chunk of US manufacturing, all for what is basically chump change compared to what we spent on the banks. Many seem to hate union workers, why I really don't know. Who in the heck can hate American workers? Seems almost unpatriotic.

Factory workers make things, stock brokers and bankers don't do squat.

Naw, in this atmosphere anything positive is seen as support for Obama.
It's that same ol' mind set...gotta be a hidden agenda or convoluted conspiracy behind everything.
Sometimes you really must wonder about about today's GOP mind set.
Anybody see Jim DeMint's little talk at CPAC today? Really ugly, whipping up the troops and declaring Democrats as evil that must be wiped from the earth...really sad.
